LIV Golf and PGA Tour Merger Talks Shift as Donald Trump Steps In

The professional golf world is on the brink of a major transformation as the LIV Golf and PGA Tour navigate high-stakes negotiations to unify the sport’s top players and circuits.

Talks between the two organizations, which have been stalled for months, have taken a dramatic turn with the involvement of Donald Trump, raising both opportunities and concerns about the future of professional golf.

Since its controversial launch in 2022, the Saudi-backed LIV Golf League has disrupted the sport with massive player contracts, shorter tournaments, and a breakaway format that challenged the PGA Tour’s dominance.

While it attracted top talent, the division between the two leagues fractured audiences, split sponsorships, and led to declining TV ratings for both sides. Now, with political and business dynamics shifting, discussions of a merger are gaining momentum once again.

The White House Factor

Before January 2025, merger discussions had been slow-moving, with the Biden administration’s Justice Department closely scrutinizing the PGA Tour’s original agreement with the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF).

Regulators were concerned about potential antitrust violations and the impact of a deal that could dissolve a competing league. However, with Trump back in the Oval Office, the environment has shifted, creating an opening for a deal that might not have been possible under previous leadership.

Former US President Donald Trump

Trump, a lifelong golf enthusiast and the owner of multiple high-profile golf resorts, recently met with PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan and spoke with Yasir al-Rumayyan, governor of Saudi Arabia’s PIF, signaling a potential acceleration of negotiations. His administration’s historically business-friendly approach to antitrust regulations has raised speculation that a deal could move forward with less regulatory resistance than before.

The Uncertain Fate of LIV Golf

One of the biggest questions surrounding the negotiations is the future of LIV Golf itself. PGA Tour officials have consistently expressed a desire for a “reunification of the game”, but what that means for LIV’s format, structure, and independent existence remains unclear.

LIV’s business model has been under scrutiny, with reports that the Saudi-backed league has lost significant money despite its high-profile tournaments. While PIF is valued at nearly $1 trillion, its continued investment in the breakaway circuit remains a contentious issue, particularly with major American sports magnates also injecting $1.5 billion into the PGA Tour’s new commercial venture.

If a deal is reached, it could mean an integration of LIV players into the PGA Tour, but whether LIV’s team-based format, shorter events, and alternative branding would survive the merger is unknown.

What’s Next for Golf?

The next few months could define the future of professional golf. As PGA Tour and LIV Golf leaders, alongside Trump and Saudi investors, explore their options, the stakes are higher than ever. A deal could mean the return of golf’s biggest stars playing together again, satisfying fans and sponsors who have long called for an end to the sport’s divide.

At the same time, Trump’s involvement raises ethical and business concerns, given his deep ties to both LIV and the PGA Tour’s tournament infrastructure. His golf courses have hosted multiple LIV events, and he has been vocal about his support for the Saudi-backed league.

As the sport grapples with its most significant business and political turning point, one thing is clear: golf’s landscape is set to change. Whether the final deal leads to a true “reunification” or yet another controversial chapter remains to be seen.
