Paris 2024 Olympics Spurs 42% Tourism Increase, Visa Data Shows

As the curtains closed on the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, the impact of this global event extended far beyond the stadiums and arenas, resonating across the French tourism sector.

New data released by Visa, the Official Payment Technology Partner of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, highlights a significant surge in tourism, with a 42% increase in the number of Visa cardholders traveling to Paris during the first week of the Games compared to the same period in 2023.

Paris Emerges as a Magnet for Global Tourists

The allure of Paris, already renowned as the world’s most visited city, was amplified by the Olympics, drawing a record number of international visitors.

According to Visa’s data, tourists flocked not only to the French capital but also to other cities hosting Olympic events.

Lille, for instance, experienced an astounding 188% increase in visitors, while Saint-Etienne and Marseille saw 150% and 48% increases, respectively.

US Tourists Lead the Charge

American visitors dominated the influx of tourists, with Visa cardholders from the United States making up the largest share.

The number of US visitors saw a 72% year-on-year growth. Other regions also showed notable increases, including Latin America (+62%) and Asia Pacific (+57%).

European fans, particularly from the UK and Germany, also demonstrated a strong interest, with a 53% increase in visits from both countries.

Spending Trends Reflect Olympic Fever

Tourism wasn’t the only area that benefited from the Games.

Visitor spending also saw a considerable rise, especially among those who attended the Olympic competitions.

Visa cardholders who participated in the events spent 24% more than those who didn’t.

In Paris alone, spending surged across various sectors, with theatres and museums witnessing a staggering 205% increase. Restaurants, food and grocery, retail goods, and fast food outlets also experienced significant boosts, reflecting the overall festive atmosphere of the Games.

Visa Europe’s CEO, Charlotte Hogg, emphasized the positive impact of the Olympics on the Parisian economy. “Our data shows a significant boost for the Parisian economy from hosting the Games. Paris has consistently been the most visited city in the world, but I’m sure that the amazing experience of being in the city for the Games or watching the events at the many iconic venues from afar will draw many more visitors in the years to come.”

With the success of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, France has not only reaffirmed its status as a premier tourist destination but also set the stage for continued growth in the tourism sector.

As Visa continues to innovate in payment technology, visitors to France can look forward to seamless and secure transactions, ensuring that the legacy of the Olympic Games extends well beyond the closing ceremony.
