Cape Sounion, Greece, Primed to be a Hot Destination in 2026

Greece has long been among the top destinations for travelers who want to experience the ancient world. Greece stands alongside Egypt and Italy as a prime destination for ancient structures, myths, and more. One of the most popular features of Ancient Greek lore is the god Poseidon.

The iconic god of earthquakes, storms, horses, and the sea is why many people visit modern day Greece. While another Poseidon site has been uncovered after years of work near Samikon, per Times of India, it’s his temple in Cape Sounion that’s set to see an influx of tourists over the summer of 2026.

Greek Mythology Taking Center Stage Again

It’s been a while since we last had a big-budget blockbuster exploring the eternally-popular myths of Ancient Greece. This summer, The Odyssey is primed to not only bring the setting back to the big screen, but also likely become the biggest film of the year.

While early access critics tend to praise the films that studios have pumped the most money into after being treated to a premiere seat, the buzz around The Odyssey seems even greater than usual. The Guardian has hailed it as “an absolute triumph,” with Academy Awards tips already being pointed its way.

At the box office, these early reviews will further help to propel people into seats – even after pre-orders sold out. Plus, it taps into a setting that people continue to seek out across entertainment. That’s why the ever-expanding range of Megaways games has seen its Ancient Greek games continue to hold very high standing.

Gods of Olympus III Megaways, Age of the Gods: King of Olympus Megaways, and Mighty Griffin Megaways continue to get clicks and spins, but the most dominant of them all is Poseidon: Ancient Fortunes Megaways. Even in slots, Poseidon is very popular, and the hope is that he’ll feature in The Odyssey adaptation as he’s in the epic.

Flocking to Poseidon’s Temple

Even without this renewed interest in Poseidon and Greek myths, the Temple of Poseidon in Cape Sounion is among the most iconic and sought-out ancient sites in the country. Back in May, it garnered even more attention when superb pictures of the Strawberry Moon over it were posted online (as seen in the video above).

Featuring mighty pillars and a hefty set of steps, it sits prominently at the southern tip of Attica to create a striking image even this far past its prime. Best of all for tourists, it can be accessed quickly and conveniently from Athens. From the middle of the city, regular buses cost about €10 and take around an hour to get to the temple.

Finding a place to stay in Cape Sounion can offer all of the benefits of a coastal getaway while remaining fairly close to the bustling city of Athens. The serene, spread out area is perfect for exploring, especially with the Temple of Poseidon forever standing in the backdrop, and there are plenty of bars, cafés, and stores for supplies.

Cape Sounion is often found on bucket lists, but after entertainment headlines push millions to immerse themselves in Ancient Greece once more, it’s bound to see an influx of tourists.
