UK Passport Prices Increase

UK passport prices today rise again, marking the second price increase in just over a year.

Adult passports applied for online will now cost £88.50, up from £82.50.

This 7% increase follows a previous 9% rise in February 2023. The consumer advocacy group Which? has expressed concern that these hikes will surprise and impact travelers needing to renew their passports.

The Home Office explains that these fee increases are not for profit but are necessary to enhance the services provided.

Children’s passports will also see a price rise, with online applications going up to £57.50 from £53.50.

Postal applications will increase as well, with adult passports via this method now costing £100, up from £93.

The increases apply not only domestically but also for overseas applications and urgent passport needs. It’s noted that passports remain free for individuals born on or before September 2, 1929.

This latest adjustment comes after a five-year period without increases, where a standard adult passport cost £75.50 online. Despite these changes, the Post Office will continue to offer its “check and send” service for £16.

The frequent increases have led to significant cost escalations in recent years, making the UK passport one of the most expensive in Europe. In comparison, Switzerland charges £122, Denmark £103, and Turkiye £210 for their passports.

Feedback from the public has been mixed, with some complaining about the quality of the new passports and others noting efficient service.

In addition to the fee hikes, UK travelers to the EU must also navigate new post-Brexit passport rules, which no longer allow adding up to nine months from an old passport to a new one.

Meanwhile, ABTA has reminded travelers about ongoing airport security rules regarding liquids and hand luggage.
