Valencia’s Stargazing Tourism Grows Ahead of 2026 Total Solar Eclipse

Stargazing tourism is attracting growing numbers of visitors to inland areas of Spain’s Valencia region as travellers prepare for the total solar eclipse on 12 August 2026. Tourism operators say interest in astronomy experiences has accelerated over the past 18 months, turning dark sky destinations into one of the region’s fastest-growing niche travel markets.

The trend is particularly visible at Camping Ribamar, the first campsite in the Comunitat Valenciana to receive Starlight certification. Visitor numbers for astronomy activities have increased from groups of around 15 people to as many as 130 participants, reflecting growing demand for nature-based experiences and eclipse-related travel.

The surge comes as Spain prepares for one of Europe’s most anticipated astronomical events. On 12 August 2026, a total solar eclipse will cross parts of northern and eastern Spain, including areas of the Valencian Community. Tourism authorities expect the event to attract thousands of domestic and international visitors, while accommodation providers in nearby Castellón are forecasting exceptionally high occupancy levels.

Dragana Lukic, astrotourism expert and tourism and social responsibility manager at Camping Ribamar, said interest has grown rapidly as more people look for experiences that combine nature, science and relaxation.

She described stargazing tourism as an opportunity to disconnect from daily routines while reconnecting with nature, family and friends. According to Lukic, visitors often arrive hoping to see the Milky Way for the first time and are surprised to discover that some of Spain’s best night skies are located only a short drive from major cities.

The campsite forms part of the growing Starlight network, an international certification programme recognising destinations that protect dark skies and provide suitable facilities for astronomical observation. These locations combine low light pollution with educational activities, guided observations and specialised equipment for visitors interested in astronomy.

Lukic said the upcoming eclipse has encouraged many people to look at the night sky again, while also inspiring new tourism businesses and astronomy projects focused on celestial events.

The appeal extends well beyond experienced astronomers. Families, couples, school groups and retirees are increasingly choosing astronomy activities as part of their holidays. Visitors from the city of Valencia are among the most enthusiastic, often discovering constellations such as the Big Dipper and the Little Dipper for the first time after years of living under urban light pollution.

Neus Cárcel, 22, said her fascination with astronomy began during childhood. She recalled visiting the Astronomical Observatory of the University of Valencia in Aras de los Olmos, where she observed Jupiter, Saturn and the Moon through professional telescopes.

She said the observatory’s welcoming atmosphere and the opportunity to experience astronomy alongside children and families made the visit particularly memorable.

Rosario Botella, also 22, said she first became interested in astrotourism while studying geography at university. Learning about the August eclipse encouraged her to research observatories across the Valencia region before visiting the tourist astronomical observatory in Culla.

Botella said the experience helped her distinguish different stars and constellations for the first time. She added that observing the sky in areas with almost no artificial light creates an atmosphere unlike anything available in urban environments.

According to Lukic, social media has also played an important role in making astronomy more accessible. Content creators and science communicators have explained eclipses and other celestial events in simple language, encouraging wider audiences to take an interest in the night sky.

She said astronomy becomes easier to understand when connected with mythology, history and everyday life rather than technical language alone. That approach, she explained, often inspires visitors to return for more experiences after their first observation session.

The business results suggest astrotourism is generating repeat demand. Lukic said around 70% of guests who participate in astronomy activities repeat them during the same stay, while many return in later years. Winter also attracts a significant number of international visitors seeking clear skies, although summer remains quieter outside major astronomical events.

The timing of this growth coincides with increasing international interest in eclipse tourism. Official tourism organisations, specialist travel companies and observatories have promoted the August 2026 eclipse as one of the most significant astronomical events visible from Europe for decades. The eclipse will reach its maximum over the Valencia area shortly after 20:30 local time, offering visitors a rare opportunity to experience totality close to sunset.

Regional authorities are also preparing for increased visitor numbers by publishing safety guidance and directing travellers to official observation sites. Tourism businesses expect demand to remain strong throughout the eclipse period, particularly in inland destinations where darker skies provide better viewing conditions than larger cities.

For the Valencia region, astrotourism is becoming more than a seasonal attraction. The combination of certified dark-sky locations, observatories, rural accommodation and astronomy experiences is creating a new tourism product that complements traditional beach holidays while encouraging visitors to explore lesser-known inland destinations. With the eclipse acting as a catalyst, industry experts believe interest in dark-sky tourism is likely to continue long after the celestial event has passed.
