Pestana Park Avenue opens in New York City in January 2020

Pestana Hotel Group, the largest multinational hotel group of Portuguese origin, announced the opening of its first property in New York, Pestana Park Avenue. Consisting of 27 floors and 95 rooms, the new New York hotel is designed by award-winning Manhattan-based architectural firm Glen & Company.

Located in the heart of Manhattan on 39th Street between Madison and Park Avenues, the hotel perfectly complements New York City’s famous line of skyscrapers and marks the launch of Pestana Hotel Group’s 100th property worldwide. The hotel is expected to open in January 2020.

“We are thrilled to announce the opening of our Park Avenue property. As we continue expanding the Pestana brand internationally, New York’s vibrant and dynamic setting will be the perfect location for our 100th opening,” said José Theotónio, CEO of Pestana Hotel Group. “The hotel embraces everything Pestana Hotel Group has to offer with its modern design and focus on delivering outstanding Portuguese hospitality, allowing guests to create and cherish each moment of their stay.”

Designed with the intention of evoking a sense of staying in a Portuguese home, the tower is built with traditional bricks and celebrates the perfect combination of privacy and convenience. Each floor consists of only three or four rooms for the utmost seclusion, in addition to featuring bespoke interior elements and large windows. Select rooms also offer balconies and iconic Empire State Building views.

Pestana Park Avenue incorporates refined Portuguese details that authentically highlight the hotel’s brand origins. These aspects include light fixtures and headboards that were created by Portuguese designers. Additional interior components such as upholstery, though designed in the U.S., were fabricated and manufactured in Portugal. Portuguese design studio Bainha de Copas was brought onto the project to design custom throws intended to mimic Portuguese tiles, known as azulejos, which can be found on the bed of each guestroom. Portuguese photographer Cátia Castel-Branco spanned the globe to capture images of a curated selection of iconic Pestana properties as a backdrop, which guests will find framed in guestrooms, the lobby, and various spaces throughout the hotel.

Pestana Park Avenue’s intimate lobby will feature a fireplace and a seating area, evoking a residential feel. The hotel will also have a home-like dining area where guests are invited to get their mornings started with tea and coffee, as well as Portuguese pastries, including the famous pastéis de nata, and other breakfast items – all complimentary. Travelers can unwind, relax or work in this space throughout the day and evening. In the warmer months, an outdoor courtyard featuring a mural design by the Portuguese artist Manuel Cargaleiro and crafted by one of the oldest Portuguese tile makers Viúva Lamego can also be enjoyed.

“We were extremely excited to take on this project,” said Glen Coben, Architect and Founder of Glen & Company. “In working with Pestana, we quickly learned the brand is constantly taking into account guests’ needs and how they would like their experience to unfold. Our goal was to assist Pestana in creating an intimate experience for their travelers. We wanted the residential feeling to consistently resonate from the time people enter the lobby to when they unwind in the comfort of their guestroom.”

Each of the guestrooms will have elements that serve a specific purpose, such as full-length rotating mirrors with hangers attached for multifunctionality. The digital television frames in each room doubly function as an electronic display for Pestana’s custom photographs and artwork. Accommodations are well-equipped with everything the modern traveler requires, including high-speed Internet and USB sockets.
