SunExpress, a joint venture of Turkish Airlines and Lufthansa, launched a strategy to replace plastic products used on its international flights on June 5, 2019 World Environment Day, with recyclable materials. The airline will implement this initiative on all its flights permanently starting from January 2020.
SunExpress will complete the process of replacing all plastic products used on its flights with products made from eco-friendly wood and paper in January 2020. With this initiative, the airline will be able to use sustainable eco-friendly alternative products instead of a total of 10 million single-use plastic products by the end of 2020.
With its modern and efficient fleet, SunExpress was ranked sixth by the renowned worldwide Airline Index 2018 of the climate protection organization “atmosfair”, which compares nearly 200 large airlines worldwide according to their climate efficiency and carbon emissions.
As an innovative and environmentally friendly airline, SunExpress, which creates environmental projects for a sustainable future, also aims to contribute to protecting nature by raising awareness within the company. In this context, the Green Alliance team, consisting of volunteer SunExpress employees, launched an in-house fundraising campaign in cooperation with the Izmir Regional Directorate of Forestry to reforest areas destroyed by the forest fires in Izmir during August.
Having established the “SunExpress 30th Year Memorial Forest” in Ankara in October to support this campaign, SunExpress plans to continue a similar project in Izmir next year.
