Avianca adds 1,800 seats and a new Guatemala to San Francisco route for the World Cup

Avianca is adding 1,800 extra seats and a new direct route between Guatemala and San Francisco to carry Latin American fans to the 2026 World Cup. The expansion strengthens the airline’s network across the United States, Canada and Mexico ahead of the tournament.

The additional frequencies will boost capacity on routes connecting Bogota with Miami, Dallas and Mexico City, as well as Quito with New York. The new Guatemala to San Francisco service will operate 4 weekly frequencies, offering more than 1,400 seats per week between the two cities.

The move builds on a previously announced operation of more than 3,000 flights and close to 600,000 seats to and from the tournament host cities. Avianca, part of Grupo Abra, said it is responding to the increased demand expected during the World Cup season.

“In a season that will mobilize millions of fans across the continent, Avianca continues working to offer a robust, flexible network with more travel options. This additional operation reflects our ability to respond to market demand while continuing to connect travelers with the main host cities of the world’s biggest soccer celebration,” said Gabriel Oliva, CEO of Avianca.

With the increase, Avianca now connects more than 80 destinations in 25 countries through 155 routes. The airline offers nonstop service to 10 of the tournament’s 16 host cities.

In the United States, those cities are Miami, New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Boston, Dallas and Houston. In Mexico, the airline serves Mexico City and Monterrey, while Toronto provides the Canadian connection.

Avianca is positioning the expanded operation as a tailored travel experience for the high-demand season. Business Class Americas is available on 100 percent of the airline’s international routes within the continent.

The carrier’s Light Fare includes one 10 kg carry-on bag plus one personal item for flights within the Americas. Meals and beverages are included on international flights longer than 3.5 hours.

The additional seats are now available through Avianca’s official website, the mobile app, physical points of sale and travel agencies.

Avianca, a member of Star Alliance, has more than 105 years of operations in Colombia and is the leading airline group in Colombia, Ecuador and Central America. It operates more than 155 routes, over 700 daily flights and a fleet of 140 Airbus A320 and Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft.

The airline carried nearly 38 million passengers across more than 258,000 flights in 2024. Its Lifemiles loyalty program is one of the largest in Latin America, with more than 14 million members and partnerships with more than 400 affiliated merchants.

The World Cup expansion reflects the wider role airlines are playing in moving fans across the Americas during one of the largest sporting events ever hosted in the region. The 2026 tournament is being co-hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada.
