easyJet Opens New Bases in Italy

easyJet is set to expand its presence in Italy with new bases at Milan Linate and Rome Fiumicino, scheduled to open in spring 2025.

This development follows the European Commission’s decision to approve easyJet as the short-haul remedy taker in the ongoing acquisition of a stake in ITA Airways by Lufthansa.

The expansion will see easyJet base five aircraft at Milan Linate and three at Rome Fiumicino, creating around 300 new jobs across these two bases. This move solidifies Italy as easyJet’s second-largest market, where the airline will serve more than 21 million customers annually. In total, easyJet will operate out of 20 Italian airports, with 38 aircraft spread across four bases, including Milan Malpensa and Naples.

Milan Malpensa remains a cornerstone of easyJet’s operations in Italy and Europe. As the airline’s largest base in continental Europe, it has carried over 100 million passengers to and from the hub since it began operations there in 1998. Over its 26 years in Italy, easyJet has transported more than 210 million passengers across its network.

Kenton Jarvis, easyJet CFO and incoming CEO, commented, “We are pleased to be approved as the short-haul remedy taker in Milan and Rome. This will ensure the Italian market remains competitive, with easyJet now able to offer a wider choice of destinations and low fares for Italian consumers, with those flying to and from Linate and Rome benefiting from new services from spring onwards. This move also confirms the airline’s key role in the Italian market providing the opportunity for continued investment, additional jobs and growth.”

Lorenzo Lagorio, country manager Italy, easyJet, commented, “Having carried more than 210 million passengers to and from Italy in the last 26 years, we have proudly supported the democratisation of local air transport in the country, enabling more and more Italians to travel conveniently and seamlessly across Europe. We are excited by the opportunity to grow our presence in both Milan and Rome, creating jobs and continuing to provide more choices and options to our customers.

“This wouldn’t have been possible without the support of our people who represent a key factor in our success and we look forward to welcoming crew at our new Linate and Fiumicino bases.”

With this expansion, travelers in Italy can look forward to an increased choice of destinations and competitive fares. easyJet’s move underscores its commitment to growing its footprint in the Italian market, providing more convenient travel options and boosting connectivity for Italian and international travelers alike.
