Passengers travelling between Cologne and Bonn are set to face major disruption as Deutsche Bahn begins a large-scale rail upgrade project on one of Germany’s busiest routes.
The works start on July 10 and will last for approximately five months, affecting services across North Rhine-Westphalia, Rhineland-Palatinate and parts of Hesse.
Sections of track between Troisdorf, Bonn and Unkel will be fully closed during the project, leading to widespread train cancellations and replacement bus services on regional and S-Bahn lines. Key routes via Cologne Central Station towards Bonn are impacted, with more than 25km of track being renewed in North Rhine-Westphalia alone.
The renovation focuses on expanding the line to three or four tracks to improve reliability and frequency, particularly for S-Bahn services. As part of the upgrade, the S13 line will be extended beyond its current route from Kerpen-Horrem via Cologne Central Station and Cologne Bonn Airport to Troisdorf.
From the end of 2026, the S13 is expected to run through to Bonn-Beuel, two years earlier than originally planned. A further extension to Bonn-Oberkassel is scheduled to be completed from 2030 onwards.
The project also includes upgrades to four stations, which will be redesigned to reflect the surrounding Rhine landscape. Stations in Königswinter, Rhöndorf and Niederdollendorf will be modernised, while Bad Honnef station will be completely rebuilt and relocated 400m to the north.
Train services will be heavily affected throughout the closure period. The RE8 and RB27 lines will see cancellations between Troisdorf and Koblenz from July 10 to September 11, with trains diverted via Cologne Bonn Airport. From September 12 to December 12, cancellations will affect services between Cologne Messe Deutz and Koblenz.
There will also be reduced services on S-Bahn lines S12 and S19. On Sundays, the S12 will run hourly between Blankenberg and Au (Sieg), while the S19 will operate hourly between Cologne Bonn Airport or Troisdorf and Au (Sieg). The RB30 service towards the Eifel region will be suspended between Bonn and Remagen for the duration of the closure.
Additional peak-time services on the RB48 line between Cologne and Bonn Central Station will be cancelled, adding further pressure during rush hour. Travellers are advised to allow extra time for journeys and check schedules in advance during the construction period.
