Train travel between Cologne and Düsseldorf is disrupted today after multiple rail faults affected busy routes across Germany’s Rhineland region, forcing the introduction of replacement bus services and rerouted trains. Deutsche Bahn reports that the most significant issue was a faulty signal box in the Norf district of Neuss, which caused widespread disruption from Monday morning before being repaired later in the afternoon.
Despite the repair, passengers are warned to expect ongoing delays and cancellations along affected lines for several hours. The fault was reported shortly after 11 a.m., hitting key regional and suburban services that link major cities, commuter hubs and Cologne/Bonn Airport, making the disruption particularly challenging for travellers and airport-bound passengers.
Which routes are affected
Several important rail services in the Rhineland are impacted. The RE6 (RRX) regional express, which normally runs between Cologne/Bonn Airport and Minden, and the RE7 service between Rheine and Krefeld are both affected by delays and cancellations. The S11 suburban line, connecting Bergisch Gladbach with Düsseldorf Airport, has also been unable to operate as scheduled.
To keep passengers moving, Deutsche Bahn has deployed rail replacement buses across the region. Buses are operating between Cologne Central Station and Neuss Central Station, using a mixed fleet from several transport companies. In addition, a separate replacement service is running between Bergisch Gladbach and Cologne-Mülheim, scheduled to operate until at least 2:30 p.m., though the end time for other replacement routes remains unclear.
Reroutes, slower journeys and further delays
An alternative plan has been put in place for RE7 passengers, with regional trains rerouted between Wuppertal Central Station and Meerbusch-Overath. These trains make replacement stops in Düsseldorf, but several regular stations are skipped, including Neuss Central Station, Dormagen, Cologne Central Station, Cologne Messe/Deutz, Opladen and Solingen Central Station.
Compounding the disruption, a separate switch malfunction near Hürth-Kalscheuren is slowing additional services, including RE5, RE12, RE22, RB24, RB26 and RB48. Rail operators expect further delays and partial cancellations in this area, adding to the pressure on an already strained network.
For travellers moving through western Germany, particularly between Cologne and Düsseldorf, the advice is to allow extra time, check connections frequently and be prepared for bus replacements or altered stopping patterns as services recover.
