Cologne Cathedral to charge entry for tourists from 2026

Cologne Cathedral will begin charging an entry fee for tourists from the second half of 2026 as church authorities seek to address rising maintenance and operating costs at one of Germany’s most visited landmarks. Officials announced the decision during a press conference, saying the move aims to improve the financial stability of the cathedral.

The iconic Gothic cathedral currently costs more to operate than it generates in revenue. Expenses reached about €14.2 million in 2024 while income stood at roughly €14 million, and costs are expected to rise further to €16 million this year.

Entry fee planned to support cathedral maintenance

The cathedral chapter said the new admission fee will help cover the growing costs of preservation, protection and day-to-day operations. Cologne Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, requires continuous restoration and maintenance work due to its scale, age and exposure to environmental conditions.

Church officials confirmed that worshippers attending services or coming to pray will continue to have free access. The fee will apply primarily to tourists visiting the cathedral as a landmark attraction.

“We must increase our own revenue,” said Guido Assmann, Provost of Cologne Cathedral.

A detailed concept for how the entry system will work is now being developed. Authorities have not yet decided how much visitors will be required to pay.

Financial pressures behind the decision

Cologne Cathedral has seen operating costs rise steadily in recent years. Officials say the cathedral’s financial reserves have already been exhausted, making new sources of revenue necessary.

As part of cost-cutting measures, the cathedral’s historic construction workshop has already reduced its workforce from 100 to 85 employees. The workshop is responsible for the continuous restoration and preservation of the landmark.

The cathedral has traditionally been free to enter and is typically open daily from about 6am to 8pm. Visitors already pay separate admission fees to access the cathedral treasury and to climb the famous twin towers.

One of Germany’s most visited landmarks

Cologne Cathedral attracts around 6 million visitors each year, making it one of the most visited tourist sites in Germany. Its towering Gothic architecture and central location next to Cologne’s main railway station make it a major draw for international travellers.

Most churches in Germany remain free to enter, although visitors often pay to access towers, museums or church treasure collections. In many other countries, however, admission fees for historic churches and cathedrals are common.

Officials say the new entry fee aims to ensure that Cologne Cathedral can continue preserving its structure and welcoming visitors in the years ahead.
