The findings show that while ticket prices dipped slightly last year before rising again in 2026, travelers are increasingly weighing factors beyond cost, such as in-flight comfort, reliability and how airlines handle pets. The report uses data from the US Department of Transportation to assess real operational performance across domestic flights.
Spirit Airlines takes the top overall position, also ranking as the most affordable and most reliable carrier. The airline records the lowest rates of cancellations, delays, mishandled baggage and denied boardings among its competitors, making it a consistent performer across key operational metrics.
For passengers prioritising comfort, several airlines share the top spot. JetBlue Airways, Hawaiian Airlines, American Airlines and Southwest Airlines are identified as the most comfortable, offering amenities such as Wi-Fi access, extra legroom and complimentary snacks and beverages on many flights.
Safety rankings place Frontier Airlines at the top for 2026, with Spirit Airlines named as the runner-up. The safety assessment considers factors including aviation incidents, injuries, fleet age and regulatory penalties over recent years.
For travelers flying with pets, regional carriers stand out. SkyWest Airlines and Envoy Air are named the most pet-friendly airlines, reporting no animal-related incidents. However, several major carriers, including Frontier, JetBlue, Southwest and Spirit, do not transport animals, which may influence traveler choice.
