Munich Airport unveils new Terminal 1 pier with space for 6 million more passengers

Munich Airport has officially opened a new pier at Terminal 1, adding capacity for up to 6 million additional passengers per year and strengthening its role as a major European aviation hub. The new facility spans around 95,000 square meters and is designed to accommodate up to twelve short- and medium-haul aircraft or six wide-body jets at the same time.

The expansion introduces modern check-in areas, centralized security checkpoints with advanced CT technology, and upgraded passenger amenities. The pier will host around 40 international airlines and offers enhanced connectivity alongside a broader range of retail, dining, and lounge experiences.

The new pier was inaugurated during a ceremony attended by around 1,000 invited guests from politics, business, and aviation. Speakers included Minister-President of Bavaria Dr. Markus Söder, Federal Minister of Transport Patrick Schnieder, Bavarian Finance Minister Albert Füracker, Munich city official Dr. Christian Scharpf, and Munich Airport CEO Jost Lammers.

“The new pier represents the future of our airport: more capacity, more comfort, more international connections. As a modern gateway to the world, it strengthens our role as a leading European aviation hub,” said Jost Lammers, Chief Executive Officer of Munich Airport.

Covering six levels, the new building integrates high-quality architecture with state-of-the-art technology to create a seamless passenger experience. Three levels are dedicated to passenger operations, while travelers can also access designated quiet areas, rest zones, and prayer rooms throughout the facility.

The pier introduces two premium lounges, including the two-story Airport Lounge World, which spans 1,200 square meters and offers panoramic views of the apron and the Alps. The lounge features dining options, workspaces, relaxation areas, and a children’s play zone. Emirates passengers can also access the airline’s dedicated lounge located in Terminal 1 A on Level 4.

Dining and retail form a central part of the new passenger experience. Five new restaurants operated by Allresto combine regional Bavarian specialties with international cuisine, including halal, vegetarian, and vegan options. At the heart of the pier is a central marketplace surrounded by around 20 retail and service outlets.

One of the highlights is Munich Airport’s first walkthrough duty-free concept, offering products across beauty, spirits, and accessories. The shopping mix also includes global brands such as Boss, Ralph Lauren, Emporio Armani, and TUMI, alongside local offerings like the FC Bayern fan shop.

The project represents an investment of €665 million, funded independently by the airport despite challenges during the pandemic. Officials say the expansion sends a strong signal about Munich Airport’s long-term growth strategy and its ambition to enhance the travel experience for passengers.
