Few airports in the world manage to turn a travel stop into a festive destination in its own right. But every winter, Munich Airport does just that—transforming from an international transport hub into a glowing Christmas village complete with market stalls, music, and an ice rink where passengers can skate before their flights.
Now in its 25th year, the Munich Airport Christmas and Winter Market opens on November 14 at the Munich Airport Center (MAC), continuing a tradition that blends Bavarian charm with global travel. The market runs daily through December 28, 2025, offering visitors, employees, and passengers a place to unwind and celebrate the holiday season in the middle of Europe’s busiest air corridor.
According to the airport, the market attracts thousands of travelers and locals each year with its mix of festive décor, local delicacies, and entertainment. Around 40 wooden stalls line the covered outdoor forum—Europe’s largest roofed public square—selling handmade gifts, regional food, and winter treats like roasted almonds and mulled wine. The scent of cinnamon and pine fills the air as live performances bring warmth to the winter evenings.
A Holiday Tradition Under One Roof
At the heart of the market is a 600-square-meter ice rink, open for skating and curling sessions that can be booked online. Families and travelers looking to stretch their legs between connections often take to the ice, while others linger around the rink with warm drinks and festive snacks. Every Wednesday evening, the rink transforms into an ice disco, with music and lights turning the airport into an impromptu dance floor.
Visitors can also take part in creative holiday workshops, from wreath-making and ceramic painting to Christmas crafts for children. The market’s entertainment program includes magic shows, soap bubble performances, and appearances from Santa Claus on November 27, December 6, and December 19. For younger guests, his visits remain one of the most anticipated moments of the season.
“With its cozy huts, twinkling lights, and festive music, the Christmas and winter market offers an atmospheric break from the bustle of the airport,” Munich Airport said in a statement. “It has become a beloved tradition for travelers and residents alike.”
Giving Back and Lighting Up the Night
New this year is the “Wish Tree” initiative, held on December 6 and 7, which supports children from charitable institutions and social organizations. Visitors can select a wish note from the tree, purchase the corresponding gift, and drop it off at the “Elk Hut” by December 18. The gifts are later distributed to children across the region—an effort that brings a sense of community and goodwill to the airport’s seasonal festivities.
After sundown, the market becomes even more atmospheric. Regional artists and bands perform each evening, offering live music that ranges from pop and jazz to gospel and modern folk. Meanwhile, the Christmas light tours—a 50-minute guided bus experience—take participants around the illuminated airport grounds. Tickets are available exclusively online, with the tour starting at the light tour hut beside the market square.
In addition to festive programming, Munich Airport has ensured the event remains accessible for all visitors. Entry to the winter market is free, with one hour of complimentary parking and discounted rates for up to three hours. The market operates daily from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., closing early at 4 p.m. on Christmas Eve.
As one of the few airports in the world to host a full-scale winter market, Munich’s approach reflects Germany’s broader Christmas culture—where craftsmanship, local flavor, and conviviality are as important as travel efficiency. For those arriving or departing during the festive season, it’s an unexpected reminder that even in transit, there’s time to pause, celebrate, and enjoy the journey.
