Netflix has expanded the world of Sweet Magnolias in its newly released fifth season, taking the long-running Southern drama beyond its familiar Georgia backdrops and into New York City and Savannah.
The new season, which premiered on 11 June 2026, continues to follow lifelong friends Maddie Townsend, Dana Sue Sullivan and Helen Decatur as they navigate changing careers, relationships and family tensions. While the fictional town of Serenity remains central to the series, the latest episodes introduce larger urban settings and coastal scenery that reflect major changes in the characters’ lives.
The show, adapted from the novels by Sherryl Woods, has traditionally filmed across Georgia, especially in and around Covington. Season five keeps many of those locations while adding scenes shot in Manhattan and Savannah as storylines move outside the small-town environment that defined earlier seasons.
According to Netflix Tudum, the season consists of 10 episodes and follows Maddie after she accepts a publishing-related opportunity in New York City. Creator Sheryl J. Anderson said the move allowed the series to explore the friendships “in a new context” while still preserving the emotional tone that has made the show popular with viewers.
New York brings a new atmosphere to the series
Several scenes in season five were filmed in well-known parts of Manhattan, giving the series a more urban look than previous seasons. The show uses landmarks including Central Park and Grand Central Terminal as Maddie begins her new chapter in New York.
One of the most recognisable locations featured is the Alice in Wonderland statue in Central Park, a bronze sculpture popular with both tourists and local families. The location appears during scenes that underline Maddie’s personal transition away from Serenity.
Actor JoAnna Garcia Swisher, who plays Maddie, said filming in New York brought a different energy to the production. In interviews released alongside the season premiere, she described scenes shot at iconic city locations, including moments filmed near Radio City Music Hall at sunrise.
The season also introduces several new characters connected to Maddie’s New York storyline. Actress Jamie-Lynn Sigler joins the cast as author Nell Winters, while additional newcomers expand both the New York and Serenity storylines.
Beyond the landmarks, the show includes scenes set in rooftop bars, boutiques and theatres, helping create a contrast between Manhattan’s fast-paced atmosphere and Serenity’s slower Southern rhythm.
Georgia remains the heart of Serenity
Despite the move into new territory, Georgia continues to provide the foundation for the fictional town of Serenity. Much of the filming again took place in Covington, a city that has hosted numerous television productions over the past decade.
The Newton County Courthouse, one of Covington’s best-known landmarks, once again appears prominently as part of Serenity’s town centre. The courthouse, built in the late 19th century in Second Empire architectural style, has become one of the visual signatures of the series.
Fans of the show may also recognise locations reused from earlier seasons. The building representing the Corner Spa is actually home to a real law office in Covington, while the restaurant standing in for Sullivan’s is the popular local venue Mystic Grill, which was also featured in The Vampire Diaries.
Other returning filming sites include Decatur, where the Oakhurst Presbyterian Church serves as Serenity’s Lutheran church. The church’s stained-glass windows and historic interior continue to provide one of the show’s more recognisable visual settings.
Meanwhile, McDonough again appears in scenes connected to Serenity High School. Production crews used Henry County Middle School for indoor school scenes and sports sequences.
Season five also expands into Savannah, Georgia, where the show filmed scenes connected to Helen’s bachelorette celebration. Historic streets, riverside locations and public squares provide a more romantic backdrop for several episodes.
River Street, one of Savannah’s most visited tourist areas, appears throughout the season with its converted warehouses, restaurants and bars overlooking the Savannah River. The production also filmed near the ferry linking downtown Savannah with Hutchinson Island.
The wider filming map reflects how the series is evolving as its characters enter new stages in their personal lives. While Serenity remains fictional, the production continues to rely heavily on real American destinations to build the show’s identity.
Since first premiering in 2020, Sweet Magnolias has become one of Netflix’s most consistent comfort-drama series, combining Southern small-town storytelling with themes of friendship, family and personal reinvention. Season five keeps those themes intact while broadening the show’s visual world beyond Georgia for the first time in a major way.
