Switzerland’s Riviera: Weggis Draws Visitors with Rigi and Lake Lucerne

Weggis, a lakeside resort on the northern shore of Lake Lucerne, is strengthening its position as one of central Switzerland’s most distinctive tourism destinations, combining mountain scenery, wellness experiences, historic landmarks and easy access to some of the country’s most popular attractions.

Located in the canton of Lucerne, the town sits at the foot of Mount Rigi, often referred to as the “Queen of the Mountains.” The destination is known for its unusually mild climate, which allows palm trees, fig trees and chestnut trees to thrive along its waterfront promenade, earning Weggis the nickname “the Riviera of Central Switzerland.”

The destination continues to attract visitors seeking a quieter alternative to larger Swiss tourism hubs while remaining within easy reach of Lucerne, Vitznau, Gersau and Brunnen. Regular ferries, passenger boats and road connections make the village a popular base for exploring the wider Lake Lucerne region.

Mark Twain and a Long Tourism Legacy

Weggis has welcomed visitors for more than a century. Among its most famous admirers was Mark Twain, who described the resort in 1897 as “the most enchanting place on the Riviera of Lucerne.” Today, a monument along the lakeside promenade commemorates the celebrated American author and his connection to the region.

The town’s historic appeal extends beyond literary history. The parish church of St Maria of Einsiedeln, rebuilt in the late Baroque style around 1700, remains one of Weggis’ most recognisable landmarks. Visitors can also explore Villa Rachmaninoff (Senar), the former summer residence of Russian composer Sergei Rachmaninoff, which overlooks the lake from extensive landscaped grounds.

Rigi Views, Wellness and Lake Experiences

One of Weggis’ biggest attractions is its direct connection to Mount Rigi. A cable car links the lakeside village with higher elevations, where visitors can access hiking routes, panoramic viewpoints and the famous Chänzeli terrace overlooking Lake Lucerne and the surrounding Alps.

Wellness tourism also plays a major role in the local economy. The renowned Mineralbad & Spa Rigi Kaltbad attracts visitors year-round with thermal bathing facilities, mountain views and direct access to nature. Wellness hotels throughout the resort further reinforce Weggis’ reputation as a destination focused on relaxation and wellbeing.

Lake-based activities remain another major draw. Historic paddle steamers and modern passenger vessels connect Weggis with destinations around Lake Lucerne, while waterfront walking routes and cycling paths allow visitors to explore the region at a slower pace. The town’s lakeside promenade remains one of its most photographed attractions, offering uninterrupted views of the surrounding mountains and changing light conditions throughout the day.

Tourism officials also continue to promote a calendar of seasonal events, including the annual Weggis Rose Festival, music events and traditional regional celebrations that highlight the culture of the Lucerne Riviera.

With its combination of alpine scenery, lake access, cultural heritage and wellness tourism, Weggis continues to stand out as one of Switzerland’s most appealing destinations for travellers seeking both outdoor adventure and relaxation in the heart of the country.
