Americans Are Hitting the Road Early for July Fourth Getaways

Americans are booking July Fourth trips earlier than last year, according to new data from Hertz, as strong demand for road travel builds ahead of the Independence Day holiday. The company said bookings are being made about a week earlier on average, while AAA projects 72.2 million Americans will travel during the holiday period, including 61.4 million by car.

Hertz said travelers are also spreading departures across multiple days, with July 2, June 27 and July 1 emerging as the busiest vehicle pickup dates. The trend points to a longer holiday travel window as Americans seek preferred vehicles and travel schedules.

The findings highlight continued momentum for road travel as the United States approaches its 250th anniversary celebrations. Demand remains strong for destinations that combine holiday events, family attractions and urban experiences.

SUVs Remain the Preferred Choice

SUVs continue to be the most popular vehicle category for July Fourth travel. Hertz said travelers are choosing larger vehicles for family vacations, group trips and longer-distance drives, prioritising space, comfort and flexibility.

The company also reported growing interest in fuel-efficient alternatives. Hybrid vehicle demand has increased by 140% compared with the same period last year, reflecting a desire for improved fuel economy without changing driving habits.

Electric vehicles are attracting more attention as well. Hertz said competitive rental pricing in many markets, often matching or undercutting other vehicle categories, is making EVs a more attractive option for summer travellers.

Orlando Leads Popular Holiday Destinations

Hertz identified Orlando as the leading destination for July Fourth travel this year, followed by Denver, Boston, Los Angeles and New York City.

The list reflects a mix of family-friendly destinations, major metropolitan areas and cities known for large-scale Independence Day celebrations. The company said these locations continue to attract travellers seeking both leisure experiences and holiday festivities.

Hertz expects last-minute reservations to increase as the holiday approaches. Early booking patterns suggest a summer season characterised by strong road travel demand, careful planning and growing interest in a wider range of vehicle options.
