The International Convention Centre Sydney (ICC Sydney), under the management of ASM Global, is gearing up to host the 21st General Assembly and Scientific Symposium of the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS GA 2023) from 31 August to 9 September 2023. This monumental 10-day event is poised to emphasize heritage protection, environmental sustainability, and First Nations cultural appreciation.
Spanning over six years in preparation, the assembly is expected to attract up to 1,500 specialists in archaeology, history, urban planning, architecture, and academics. They will gather at ICC Sydney to foster a grassroots interest in cultural heritage and conservation practices, both in Australia and internationally.
One of the highlights of GA2023 is the Indigenous Heritage Program, spanning two conference days. Topics of discussion include First Nations Heritage Protections in Australia and the role of Indigenous consultation in preserving both natural and cultural values. Dr. Lyndon Ormond-Parker, of Alyawarr descent, and Dr. Diane Menzies, a Rongowhakaata, Aitanga a Mahaki woman, will co-chair this program.
Geoff Donaghy, CEO of ICC Sydney, expressed the profound significance of the symposium. “ICC Sydney proudly stands on the traditional lands of the Gadigal People of the Eora Nation. Through our Legacy Program and the extensive ICOMOS GA 2023 Indigenous Heritage initiative, we aim to drive enduring positive changes by promoting First Nations heritage,” Donaghy commented.
Professor Tracy Ireland, President of Australia ICOMOS, emphasized the role of ICC Sydney in this international event. “In our world of myriad challenges, the 21st General Assembly and Scientific Symposium brings hope for a collective shift in how we perceive heritage and culture,” Prof. Ireland remarked.
