Green Key Global sustainability certification program

Green Key Global: Setting the Bar for Sustainable Hotels in North America

The American Hotel & Lodging Association (AHLA) and the Hotel Association of Canada (HAC) are joining forces. Starting April 1, they will collaboratively manage the Green Key Global sustainability certification program in both the U.S. and Canada.

Hotels interested in enhancing their sustainability practices can sign up for Green Key Global. This program, initiated by HAC in 1994, certifies hotels based on their environmental sustainability efforts.

Green Key Global’s certification process aligns with the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals. It assesses hotels on various environmental aspects, including energy and water use, waste management, and air quality.

The collaboration between AHLA and HAC is significant for the travel and hospitality industry. As travelers increasingly prioritize sustainability, Green Key Global offers hotels a credible way to showcase their environmental efforts.

Through Green Key Global, hotels can demonstrate their commitment to sustainability. The program also provides a framework for continuous improvement in environmental practices.

AHLA’s Responsible Stay® initiative complements this new partnership. It highlights the ongoing efforts of AHLA member hotels toward sustainability, including energy efficiency and waste reduction.

AHLA President & CEO Chip Rogers believes this partnership marks a significant advancement in the industry’s sustainability efforts. It provides hotels with third-party validation of their green initiatives and helps travelers make informed choices.

HAC President & CEO Susie Grynol expressed pride in the hotels’ commitments to sustainability. She emphasized that the partnership would make sustainable practices more accessible to all hotels, establishing a North American standard for environmental responsibility.
