InterContinental underground hotel opens in Shanghai, China

The world’s first underground hotel – InterContinental Shanghai Wonderland will open next week 30 kilometers from the center of Shanghai.

The hotel is built near the Sheshan Mountain National Forest Park and Chenshan Mountain Botanic Gardens. The hotel is located in the deep pit of a former mine.

Sixteen of the hotel’s 18 floors are underground, and the rooms on the bottom two floors are completely submerged and face a 33-foot-deep aquarium. The underwater portion of the hotel also includes a restaurant, pool, and watersports center.

The hotel will operate with 336 rooms and suites that all include balconies where guests can enjoy a view of waterfalls from the surrounding cliffs. It also has four meeting rooms and grand ballrooms equipped with modern technology.

The hotel was designed by the architects who also created Dubai’s Burj Al Arab and the whole construction took nearly 10 years with 5,000 architects, engineers, designers and construction workers involved.
