ME by Melia has marked the official opening of its new five-star hotel in Malaga after a near 44 million euro investment, strengthening the companys push into the premium market on the Costa del Sol and across Andalucia.
The hotel opened last December at Calle Victoria, near Plaza de la Merced, but the launch event brought together institutional, business and tourism figures, along with cultural guests, food industry representatives, influencers and content creators.
The property has 128 rooms, 14 junior suites and eight premium suites, plus an infinity pool with panoramic views and a rooftop dining space.
Gabriel Escarrer, president and chief executive of Melia Hotels International, said the project was designed to create “an emblematic hotel”. He added that he and his team “fell in love with the place” the first time they visited.
“The location could not be more magical,” he said.
Escarrer also said the project had faced difficulties from the start of construction, but that it was completed “on time and on schedule” thanks in part to institutional support.
He highlighted the investment of almost 44 million euros and said the hotel created more than 150 direct jobs. Melia said 81% of the workforce came from internal promotion.
The opening underlines Melia’s wider strategy to expand its premium offering in southern Spain. The company has recently pushed ahead with other high-end projects, including ME Marbella, as it looks to deepen its presence in the region.
Melia now has 22 assets in the Costa del Sol, including operating hotels and projects under development. Across Andalucia, it has 37 hotels open or in the pipeline, reflecting a clear focus on luxury and upper-upscale tourism.
The Malaga launch comes as the company continues to position itself in one of Spain’s strongest holiday markets, where demand for high-end city and resort stays remains central to its growth plans.
ME by Melia’s new opening adds another flagship property to a brand portfolio that Melia is using to target travellers seeking design-led hotels, premium service and prime urban locations.
