IHG Hotels & Resorts will open a new Crowne Plaza hotel in Parramatta in 2029 under a partnership with Sydney-based Urban Property Group, marking a major expansion of the global hotel brand into Western Sydney’s fast-growing business district.
The 217-room Crowne Plaza Parramatta will form part of a mixed-use development opposite Parramatta Train Station, directly linked to the transport hub and adjacent to Westfield Parramatta. The project aims to strengthen Parramatta’s position as Sydney’s second central business district, supported by major infrastructure, cultural, and tourism investments across the region.
Partnership Strengthens Western Sydney’s Hotel Pipeline
IHG Hotels & Resorts announced the development on October 28 in collaboration with Urban Property Group, a developer-builder behind several large-scale urban projects in New South Wales. The new hotel will feature a contemporary all-day dining restaurant, an intimate lobby bar, a rooftop infinity pool, and flexible meeting and event facilities. The design intends to attract business travellers, conference delegates, and leisure visitors seeking proximity to Sydney’s western commercial centre.
Matt Tripolone, Managing Director, Australasia & Pacific, said the deal represents a significant opportunity for IHG as Parramatta undergoes major transformation. “We’re delighted to partner with Urban and maximise this exceptional opportunity to bring our world-famous Crowne Plaza brand to Parramatta at a pivotal time in the city’s transformation,” said Tripolone.
He noted that Western Sydney continues to experience record levels of investment and growth. “Western Sydney is one of Australia’s most dynamic growth corridors, underpinned by record levels of infrastructure investment, a flourishing business and government sector, and the arrival of Western Sydney International Airport in 2026. Crowne Plaza Parramatta will be a flagship destination for both domestic and international travellers and an important and attractive addition to the city’s evolving skyline,” he said.
Development Tied to Parramatta’s Urban and Cultural Growth
The hotel’s location opposite the city’s main train station provides direct transport links across Sydney, enhancing accessibility for visitors. It also places guests within walking distance of key retail, dining, and entertainment hubs, including the expanding Riverside Theatre precinct and the forthcoming Powerhouse Parramatta Museum — one of Australia’s most significant new cultural developments.
Parramatta’s ongoing evolution as Sydney’s second CBD has been driven by a combination of government decentralisation, educational institutions, and corporate relocations. The new Crowne Plaza will add accommodation capacity in a district already seeing sustained hotel and infrastructure growth, including transport upgrades and the upcoming Western Sydney International Airport, which is expected to improve domestic and international connectivity from 2026.
Patrick Elias, Co-CEO of Urban Property Group, said the company’s first hotel partnership will create a defining feature in Parramatta’s skyline. “We are excited to partner with IHG Hotels & Resorts to bring Crowne Plaza Parramatta to life. This marks our first-ever hotel collaboration and will become a striking, defining feature within our mixed-use development when it opens in 2029,” said Elias.
He added that Parramatta’s increasing role in Sydney’s economic and cultural landscape makes it a prime location for high-quality hospitality development. “Parramatta is set to play a key role in Sydney’s future as a major city centre, and we are proud to be creating a must-visit destination that combines quality hospitality and unrivalled connectivity for those who work here or visit from home or abroad.”
IHG Expands Crowne Plaza Presence Across Australia
The announcement adds to IHG’s growing footprint across Australia, where the Crowne Plaza brand operates in key urban centres including Sydney Darling Harbour, Melbourne, and Adelaide Mawson Lakes. The brand’s Australian network now includes 14 open hotels and seven in the pipeline. Globally, Crowne Plaza operates 415 open hotels and has 144 under development.
Known for its business-focused amenities and flexible meeting spaces, the Crowne Plaza brand has evolved to target the modern traveller who blends work and leisure. The Parramatta property will continue that approach, providing facilities that cater to both corporate guests and tourists exploring the Greater Sydney region.
IHG’s expansion into Western Sydney aligns with broader tourism and economic development strategies aimed at decentralising Sydney’s commercial core. With Parramatta emerging as a hub for government agencies, multinational companies, and major infrastructure projects, hotel demand is projected to rise steadily through the late 2020s.
When complete in 2029, Crowne Plaza Parramatta is expected to become a focal point of the city’s hospitality landscape, offering both international brand recognition and local connection. Its position within a mixed-use precinct underscores a broader shift in urban hotel development, where accommodation, business, and entertainment increasingly intersect in walkable city centres.
