BestCities Global Alliance has appointed Julia Swanson, CEO of Melbourne Convention Bureau (MCB), as its new board chair, marking a fresh chapter for the international network of leading convention destinations.
Leadership Transition and Legacy
Swanson succeeds Dr. Edward Koh, whose tenure saw significant milestones for the alliance. Under Dr. Koh’s leadership, BestCities welcomed Washington, DC as a new partner destination in 2024 and launched the innovative Association Impact Masterclass in collaboration with ICCA. The Madrid Challenge community expanded from 24 to 59 meeting planners, and the BestCities Global Forum grew in prominence, culminating in a record-setting 2025 event in Dublin with 32 association clients—despite the disruption caused by Storm Éowyn.
Swanson’s Background and Industry Impact
With over 25 years of experience in the tourism and business events sector, Julia Swanson is widely recognized as a strategic leader. During her 14-year tenure at MCB, she elevated Melbourne’s profile on the global stage, aligning the convention bureau with Visit Victoria to support the city’s broader economic goals. Her work has helped strengthen Melbourne’s position as a top-tier host for international events.
In addition to her leadership at MCB, Swanson serves on the board of the Australian Business Events Association and holds academic credentials including a Bachelor of Business (Catering and Hotel Management) and a Master of Business (Hospitality and Tourism Marketing). She is a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and has held executive roles in several international hotel chains over a 13-year span.
Vision for the Future of BestCities
As the newly appointed chair, Swanson aims to reinforce BestCities’ mission to empower its partner destinations to generate positive, sustainable impacts through meetings and events. Her leadership will emphasize knowledge sharing and minimizing the global footprint of the meetings industry.
Swanson expressed her enthusiasm for the role, stating that she looks forward to continuing the legacy of growth and collaboration established by her predecessors. She highlighted the importance of unity among the alliance’s global partners and the opportunity to foster lasting impacts through business events.
