Malaysia’s presence in the global meetings and events industry has taken a significant step forward with the appointment of John Burke, General Manager of the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (the Centre), to the Board of Directors of the International Association of Convention Centres (AIPC) for 2025.
This milestone solidifies Malaysia’s growing influence in shaping international standards in business events and highlights the Centre’s leadership in the Asia Pacific region. The appointment also aligns with Malaysia’s national ambitions to become a leading hub for international conventions and exhibitions.
Malaysia’s Strategic Position in the Global Events Landscape
Strengthening International Collaboration
The AIPC is a global association representing over 55 countries, bringing together professionals from the world’s most prominent convention and exhibition centres. Its mission centers on advancing excellence in venue management through education, networking, and innovation.
With this appointment, Malaysia now has a direct voice on the AIPC’s Board, joining an elite group of global industry leaders. Burke will work alongside President Julianne Jammers of the SwissTech Convention Center and Vice President Taubie Motlhabane of the Cape Town International Convention Centre.
Industry Vision and Regional Advocacy
John Burke stated, “This role offers a valuable platform to collaborate with global peers in shaping the future of convention centres, while highlighting the strengths of Malaysia and Asia Pacific on the world stage. I look forward to exchanging regional best practices to elevate standards across our venues and further position Kuala Lumpur and the region as leading hubs for international business events.”
His vision reflects a commitment not only to Malaysia’s growth, but to elevating the Asia Pacific region as a competitive and innovative player in the global meetings and exhibitions market.
Aligning with National Business Events Goals
Boosting Malaysia’s Economic Impact
The appointment also supports Malaysia Convention & Exhibition Bureau’s (MyCEB) long-term projections, which aim to attract 5.9 million delegates and generate RM42.12 billion in economic impact by 2030. Burke’s role at AIPC provides a strategic channel to help achieve these goals through greater global visibility and influence.
He emphasized, “This is an opportunity to amplify Malaysia’s voice on the global stage. By collaborating with AIPC’s international network, we can directly contribute to MyCEB’s targets while elevating Kuala Lumpur’s reputation as Asia’s most dynamic meetings hub.”
The Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre’s Role
The Centre, where Burke currently serves as General Manager, is Malaysia’s premier purpose-built facility for high-profile events. Situated within the Kuala Lumpur City Centre precinct, the venue spans 34,000 sqm and includes two auditoria, eight exhibition halls, 28 meeting rooms, and other world-class amenities.
Certified with the AIPC Gold Certification and numerous ISO standards, the Centre stands as a benchmark for quality, safety, sustainability, and innovation in the region. It also supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals through active tracking of its carbon emissions, waste management, and water use.
What This Means for Asia Pacific Venues
Opportunities for Regional Collaboration
Burke’s representation on the AIPC Board is not just a win for Malaysia, but for the wider Asia Pacific region. It opens doors for shared learning, regional benchmarking, and joint initiatives that can elevate standards across the board.
The Asia Pacific region has seen a surge in demand for world-class venues and professional event management. This appointment ensures that the region’s evolving needs and innovative solutions are represented in global policy discussions.
