Ethiopian Airlines Group inaugurated a new airport project in Yabello, Oromia Regional State, on 31 August 2025, alongside the launch of passenger services to the airport. The development is intended to strengthen Ethiopia’s regional connectivity and aviation infrastructure.
The project cost more than 1 billion Ethiopian birr and includes a new airfield, access roads, a temporary terminal, and supporting facilities. The airport, located 11 kilometers from Yabello Town in Borena Zone, is expected to expand air transport access across southern Oromia.
Infrastructure Development
The inauguration was attended by government officials, Ethiopian Airlines executives, community representatives, and other stakeholders. The airline described the project as part of its ongoing commitment to regional aviation expansion and socio-economic development in Ethiopia.
“The completion of the Yabello Airport project demonstrates Ethiopian Airline’s commitment to advancing aviation infrastructure that transforms lives and connect communities across Ethiopia. This is a transformative moment for the local community and the entire region, and as the flag carrier of Ethiopia, we are proud to have made this moment a reality,” said Mesfin Tasew, Ethiopian Airlines Group CEO.
Regional Impact
The new airport is expected to play a role in boosting trade, tourism, and investment in Borena Zone and the wider Oromia region. Improved accessibility is intended to foster socio-economic growth, strengthen people-to-people connections, and support Ethiopia’s national development strategy.
Yabello is among several domestic aviation infrastructure projects being advanced by Ethiopian Airlines. The carrier continues to focus on enhancing domestic and regional air transport networks as part of its broader strategy to expand Ethiopia’s aviation landscape.
