Kuwait reopens airspace after two-month closure

Kuwait has reopened its airspace at Kuwait International Airport after a nearly two-month closure, with flights set to resume gradually, the state-run news agency Kuna said as reported by Gulf News.

The move marks the start of a phased restart of operations following a temporary precautionary suspension imposed since 28 February amid regional developments. The process will begin with the reopening of Terminals 4 and 5 to selected destinations from Sunday, 26 April.

Sheikh Hamoud Mubarak Al Sabah, Chairman of the General Civil Aviation Authority, said the move was coordinated with relevant domestic and international authorities to ensure operations resume in line with the highest safety and security standards.

He added that the reopening forms part of a carefully planned, gradual approach to restoring air traffic, with full operations expected to resume in due course.

Repairs to the airport have been made

Authorities said damage assessments had been completed following what they described as an Iranian attack and actions by affiliated armed groups, with technical teams undertaking maintenance and repairs to restore operational readiness.

Sheikh Hamoud praised the efforts of aviation staff and government entities involved in managing the situation and accelerating recovery and expressed appreciation for Saudi Arabia’s support in facilitating Kuwaiti carriers through its airports.

Kuwait Airways had resumed commercial flights to and from Istanbul, Turkey, via Saudi Arabia’s Dammam Airport starting 1 April, with two weekly flights on Wednesdays and Fridays.

Al-Shatti added that flights to London, Riyadh, Mumbai, Thiruvananthapuram, Chennai, Kochi, Delhi, and Manila will run three times per week for each destination, noting that flights to Cairo will operate once a day.

He explained that flights to Jeddah and Dhaka will operate four times per week for each destination, while Beirut, Damascus, and Lahore will run two weekly flights each. Istanbul, Guangzhou, and Colombo will each have one flight a week.

The airline added that operations will be continuously reviewed, stating: “The situation will continue to be monitored and assessed on an ongoing basis, while maintaining adherence to the exceptional safety measures in place until further notice.”

Jazeera Airways also confirmed it is resuming operations following official confirmation from authorities on the reopening of national airspace, resuming direct operations from Terminal 5 starting 26 April.

Jazeera Airways outlined a list of direct destinations from Terminal 5, including: Delhi, Mumbai, Kochi, Amman, Cairo, Beirut, Damascus, Istanbul and Dubai.

The airline said its alternative transit route via Dammam remains operational, adding: “While our alternative transit route via Dammam remains fully functional, we are now operating direct flights from Kuwait as well. In addition to direct flights, Jazeera Airways continues to operate services via Dammam, covering a broader network of destinations including Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Alexandria, Luxor, Dhaka, Chennai, Hyderabad, Karachi, Islamabad, Lahore, Colombo, Kathmandu and Thiruvananthapuram. The airline noted that these operations are scheduled to run until 2 May.
