A Ryanair flight to Marrakech departed empty from Vatry Airport in eastern France on 14 April, leaving 192 passengers stranded after they were denied boarding. The 3 hour 30 minute flight took off without travellers due to a shortage of security staff at the airport. No passengers have yet received compensation following the incident.
For travellers, this matters because it highlights how airport staffing issues can disrupt flights even when planes are ready to depart. Passengers were left unable to board despite holding valid tickets, raising concerns over contingency planning and passenger rights.
The disruption occurred at Vatry Airport in the Marne region, where passengers were prevented from boarding after security teams failed to report for duty. Airport officials said they were taken by surprise by the absence of staff needed to process travellers.
“At the moment we opened check-in for passengers, there was no security team. We learned they were all on sick leave”, said Fabrice Pauquet, director of Vatry Airport.
Among those affected was Michèle Oudin, who said she spent nearly 1,500 euros on tickets with her husband to celebrate their disabled daughter’s birthday.
“There is reason to be angry. It matters deeply to me because the only way we have, as long as we are still here, is to be able to let her travel. It was something that meant a lot to us for her. Unfortunately, everything has been ruined, so she feels a lot of resentment”, said Michèle Oudin, Ryanair passenger.
Other passengers also expressed frustration on social media, with one traveller describing the situation as “This is outrageous!”.
