More than 1,700 passengers and crew remain confined on the cruise ship Ambition, operated by Ambassador Cruise Line, docked in the French port of Bordeaux after a 90-year-old passenger died and around 50 others developed symptoms of gastroenteritis during the voyage.
French health authorities are investigating the source of the outbreak on board the Ambition, which arrived in south-west France after a route that began in the Shetland Islands and included stops in Belfast, Liverpool and Brest.
The company said it was applying cleaning and prevention protocols after the first cases appeared on board. Officials are still trying to determine whether the incident is linked to norovirus or food poisoning, while tests continue in hospitals in Bordeaux.
Passengers showed peak symptoms when the ship was docked in Brest, one of the ports on the itinerary. Around 50 people on board have suffered vomiting, diarrhoea and other gastrointestinal symptoms.
The passengers and crew remain isolated inside the vessel while the investigation continues. The ship is carrying 1,233 passengers and about 500 crew, the majority of them British or Irish.
Authorities have not yet confirmed the cause of the outbreak. Initial tests on board did not detect norovirus, but further analysis is under way in Bordeaux to clarify how the infection spread. Food poisoning has not been excluded.
The incident has drawn attention to health risks on cruise ships, where outbreaks can spread quickly in enclosed environments with shared dining and leisure spaces. Cruise lines typically rely on strict cleaning regimes, isolation of sick passengers and close coordination with port and health officials to contain illnesses.
In this case, officials have kept the ship at berth while they assess whether the illness was caused by norovirus, a highly contagious stomach bug, or by contaminated food. Such investigations can take time because symptoms often overlap and test results may not immediately identify a single cause.
Ambassador Cruise Line said it had introduced intensive disinfection of communal areas, restrictions on some dining services and repeated hygiene advice for passengers. The vessel remains unable to continue its journey while health checks are completed. The ship had been scheduled to depart Bordeaux for Spain.
For the tourism sector, the episode is a reminder of how quickly onboard illness can disrupt itineraries and leave passengers stranded far from home. Cruise operators often face intense scrutiny when outbreaks occur, especially when older travellers are involved and a death has been reported.
The route started in the Shetland Islands and took in ports in the UK and France before arriving in Bordeaux. The Ambition is now the subject of a medical and public health investigation as authorities work to establish whether more passengers or crew may be affected.
