Fairmont Cheshire opens as Fairmont’s 4th UK hotel

Fairmont Hotels and Resorts has opened its fourth property in the UK with the launch of Fairmont Cheshire, The Mere, following a major transformation of the historic estate. The opening adds a new luxury countryside hotel to the northwest of England and brings the brand’s signature service to the region for the first time.

The property sits on a site that is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 and has previously operated as a leisure estate and private club. It has now returned to hotel use after a GBP35 million acquisition and an additional GBP90 million spent on its redevelopment by Select Group.

The hotel is being positioned as a venue for celebrations, business events and weddings. Its Grand Ballroom covers 1,000 square metres and can host up to 1,000 guests, while four boardrooms overlook the surrounding landscape for meetings and private dining.

Fairmont Cheshire, The Mere is designed to combine the feel of a heritage estate with a contemporary luxury hotel. The company said the project builds on the property’s long local history while creating a new social and hospitality destination for the area.

The opening marks a further expansion for Fairmont in Britain, where it now has four hotels. The brand is best known globally for large-scale luxury properties and event-led stays, and the Cheshire opening strengthens its presence outside major city centres.

The estate’s history is a key part of the pitch. Fairmont said the transformation respects The Mere’s past while creating a modern country-house style setting for guests. The hotel is intended to serve leisure travellers, wedding parties, conference groups and private events.

Its ballroom and meeting spaces are central to that strategy. The 1,000 square metre event hall is large enough for conferences, networking functions and major social occasions, while the boardrooms are aimed at smaller gatherings and dining events.

Wedding business is also expected to play a major role. The hotel has been presented as suitable for both intimate ceremonies and multi-day celebrations, with the estate’s parkland and green views forming part of the appeal.

The launch comes as luxury hotel groups continue to target heritage properties with strong event potential. For Fairmont, the opening adds another UK address to a global portfolio built around landmark hotels, destination resorts and business travel.

No opening date was given in the source, but the property has already begun trading under the Fairmont name. The transformation follows a substantial capital spend and a repositioning that turns a long-standing local venue into a branded luxury hotel.
