Penang business events generate RM1.91bn in estimated Economic Event Impact in 2025, as the Penang Convention & Exhibition Bureau reports a sharp rise in conferences and meetings across the Malaysian state. A total of 3,391 business events take place during the year, up 64.7 percent from 2,059 in 2024, drawing 451,198 delegates and producing 824,505 room nights.
The figures mark a 47.8 percent increase in delegate numbers and a 47.6 percent rise in room nights compared with the previous year. The bureau says the results reinforce Penang’s position as a leading destination for high-value business events and support the state’s long-term Penang 2030 vision.
The review attributes part of the growth to expanded infrastructure and improved accessibility. More than 2,000 new hotel rooms are added, and direct flight connectivity is expanded, making the destination more attractive to regional and international delegates.
“These results demonstrate that business events are not only a significant economic driver for Penang but also a key contributor to the state’s long-term vision under Penang 2030,” said YB Wong Hon Wai, Penang State Exco for Tourism & Creative Economy.
He added: “There is strong potential for further growth in sectors such as advanced manufacturing, artificial intelligence, and marine-related industries. These emerging and strategic sectors present new opportunities to attract high-value business events that are closely aligned with Penang’s long-term economic priorities.”
The Penang Convention & Exhibition Bureau says it continues to refine its strategy using data and market intelligence. “At PCEB, we turn insight and foresight into action. By using data, market intelligence, and global best practices, we refine our strategies to help partners transform opportunities into real outcomes and measurable impact across Penang’s business events ecosystem,” said Ashwin Gunasekeran, CEO of PCEB.
Looking ahead, the state aims to attract more strategic and high-value events that deliver both economic returns and long-term benefits. Central to this approach is the Penang Inspiring Meetings campaign, which seeks to position the destination more firmly within the international business events community.
The campaign focuses on creating meaningful and experiential gatherings that foster stronger connections between delegates and the destination. Officials say the goal is to generate impact that extends beyond individual events and contributes to Penang’s broader economic and development ambitions.
