Turkish Hotel Association Announces Death of Industry Pioneer Sinan Babila

The Turkish Hotel Association (TÜROB) announced the death of Sinan Babila, a veteran figure in the country’s tourism industry and a former chair and founding president of the association.

TÜROB said the sector is mourning an influential leader whose career spanned more than five decades and helped shape hotel industry policy and organization in Turkey.

The association conveyed its condolences in a statement signed by President Müberra Eresin, highlighting Babila’s long service to TÜROB and his leadership in professionalizing the accommodation sector. The statement emphasized his mentorship of young professionals and his contribution to key industry initiatives and legal reforms that supported the sector’s growth.

Career and leadership roles

Babila graduated from Istanbul University’s Faculty of Law and was registered with the Istanbul Bar Association. He brought his legal training into hospitality, entering professional hotel management after taking over the Taksim Kervansaray Hotel in 1969. Colleagues credit that transition with shaping his pragmatic approach to corporate governance and sector organization.

Within TÜROB, Babila held multiple elected and executive positions over two decades. He served as a board member from 1984 to 1986, secretary-general from 1986 to 1990, and president from 1990 to 1996. He later returned to lead TÜROB between 2000 and 2006, during which time the association expanded its institutional footprint and intensified engagement with policymakers and industry partners.

According to the association, Babila played an active role in preparing sector-related legal regulations during his terms, contributing to frameworks that advanced professional standards and investor confidence. He was a founding member of the Turkish Tourism Employers’ Union and of TUGEV, underscoring his focus on policy, training, and industry development. His service extended to representation roles on the Istanbul Chamber of Commerce Assembly and the High Advisory Board of the Tourism Investors Association.

Industry impact and legacy

TÜROB credited Babila with helping to restore the Lütfi Kırdar Convention Center to active use, a step the association said enabled Istanbul to host more international gatherings. He supported major events including SKAL and Habitat meetings, which elevated the city’s profile as a global tourism and business hub. His later participation on the TÜROB Presidents’ Board allowed him to mentor successive leadership teams and share institutional knowledge.

The association’s statement portrayed Babila as a leader who combined management discipline with sector-wide representation. It said his meetings set expectations for professional conduct and collaboration as Turkey’s tourism industry expanded and diversified. Colleagues described his approach as stabilizing for a sector that has navigated cycles of rapid growth and external shocks.

Condolences from TÜROB

Announcing the news, TÜROB expressed its grief and offered condolences to Babila’s family, colleagues, and the wider tourism community. “Çok Üzgünüz… TÜROB önceki dönem Başkanlarımızdan, Türk turizminin duayeni Sinan Babila’yı kaybettik,” said Müberra Eresin, President, TÜROB.

“Merhum Başkanımız Sinan Babila’ya Allah’tan rahmet; başta kederli ailesi olmak üzere tüm yakınlarına, dostlarına, TÜROB üyelerimize ve turizm camiamıza başsağlığı ve sabırlar diliyoruz. Hepimizin başı sağ olsun,” said Müberra Eresin, President, TÜROB.

Emphasizing his stature, the statement added: “Yarım asrı aşan tecrübesiyle Sinan Babila, yalnızca bir dönemin değil, bir ekolün temsilcisi olmuştur.” It concluded with a commitment to carry his work forward: “Bizler onun izinden yürüyerek mirasını yaşatmaya devam edeceğiz,” said Müberra Eresin, President, TÜROB.

Beyond his professional activities, TÜROB noted Babila’s social profile, including his lifelong support for Fenerbahçe. The association said his contributions to Turkish tourism and to the union would be remembered with respect and gratitude. TÜROB did not provide further details on funeral arrangements, and said his legacy of strengthening institutions, promoting cultural heritage, and expanding education in the field will continue to guide its work.
