A landmark collaboration between the Italian Ministry of Culture and Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane, the Italian State Railways, has resulted in the launch of a direct train service from Rome to Pompeii, reducing the travel time to under two hours.
This move aims to make the journey to the world-renowned archaeological site faster and more comfortable for tourists and visitors.
The new service was officially inaugurated on Sunday, July 16. Several dignitaries graced the event, including Gennaro Sangiuliano, the Minister of Culture, Luigi Ferraris, the CEO of the FS Italiane Group, and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who all embarked on the inaugural journey from Rome’s Termini Station.
The Prime Minister expressed her gratification with the initiative, highlighting its potential to enhance the allure of one of the world’s most frequented archaeological sites. This improvement is expected to stimulate tourism, a vital sector of Italy’s economy.
The newly introduced service operates with a Frecciarossa 1000 train, the pride of the Trenitalia fleet, running without changes between Rome and Pompeii. This venture showcases the train as an instrument to foster tourism and culture while bridging the country by improving access to its historical treasures.
The train departs from Roma Termini every Sunday morning at 8:53, arriving in Pompeii by 10:40. During the journey, passengers can immerse themselves in the history of the ancient city of Pompeii through a video clip aired on the onboard monitors. Upon arrival, a Pompeii Link shuttle bus will be ready to transport passengers to the archaeological site. The return trip departs at 18:40, reaching Roma Termini by 20:55.
This service is an addition to the 50 daily Frecciarossa return services already operating between Rome and Pompeii, providing yet another opportunity to visit this unique location where time has stood still since 79 CE. Pompeii, a treasured archaeological site, continues to fascinate and captivate millions of visitors annually.
