Football star Mesut Özil met fans and led a youth training session at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) in Penang on 29 April 2026, drawing around 500 participants to the campus. The event, organised by the university’s Sports and Recreation Centre, combined a public meet and greet with a football clinic for young players.
The programme began at 3.15 p.m. at the USM Hockey Stadium, where students, staff and football supporters gathered for an interactive session moderated by Astro Arena commentator Zainal Abidin Rawop. Özil later took part in a hands-on football clinic involving 140 children under the age of 12.
During the forum, Özil shared his experiences playing at the highest level in Europe and internationally. He highlighted the importance of discipline, consistency and early talent development as key factors for success in professional football.
He also spoke about his football academy in Istanbul, Türkiye, which supports underprivileged children pursuing the sport. Reflecting on his visit, Özil praised Malaysia’s cultural diversity, cuisine and social harmony, describing the experience as meaningful and memorable.
The football clinic gave young participants the opportunity to train directly with the former international player in a structured and supportive environment. The session was supported by USM FC, USMKK FC and Minden Tiger.
The event was attended by senior officials including the Minister of Higher Education, YB Dato’ Seri Diraja Dr. Zambry Abd Kadir, alongside university leadership and ministry representatives.
According to USM Vice-Chancellor Professor Dato’ Seri Ir. Dr. Abdul Rahman Mohamed, the initiative reflects the university’s commitment to enhancing learning experiences beyond the classroom. “Direct exposure to a global figure like Mesut Özil provides significant added value to the development of students and the community, particularly in fostering discipline, resilience, and aspirations toward excellence,” he said.
The programme highlighted USM’s efforts to connect global sports figures with grassroots development, offering young players insight into the standards and mindset required at elite level.
