Volkswagen has integrated ChatGPT into its latest electric and new models. This feature allows drivers to communicate more naturally and effectively with their vehicles.
The integration of ChatGPT is available in all new models of Volkswagen’s fully electric ID. family. It is also available in the new Golf, Tiguan, and Passat models.
Previously, Volkswagen models allowed drivers to control infotainment, navigation, and climate systems with voice commands. Now, with ChatGPT, drivers can get information about tourist spots, access past football match details, and solve math problems.
“By seamlessly integrating ChatGPT into the backend of our voice assistant, we are now offering drivers the opportunity to use this artificial intelligence on a daily basis, thus underlining how innovative our products are,” said Kai Grünitz, Member of the Brand Board of Management responsible for Development.
Volkswagen customers can access ChatGPT using their existing VW Connect or VW Connect Plus accounts. No additional app or account is required. The digital assistant can be activated by saying “Hello IDA” or pressing a button on the steering wheel.
Only if a query cannot be answered by the Volkswagen system, it is forwarded anonymously to ChatGPT; the answer is then provided in the familiar Volkswagen voice.
At no point does ChatGPT gain access to vehicle data. Questions and answers are deleted immediately in order to ensure optimal data protection.
The online voice assistant can be deactivated either in the settings area of the Volkswagen app or in the infotainment system’s privacy settings.
This technology was introduced at the CES electronics show in January 2024. It is currently available in English (US), English (UK), Spanish, Czech and German. The innovation was made possible through a partnership with Cerence Inc., a leader in automotive AI solutions.
Volkswagen aims to offer a safer, more informative, and interactive driving experience with this new technology. This step highlights the company’s innovative approach in the automotive industry.
