AAA Reveals Top July 4 Destinations and Busiest Travel Times for 2025

AAA expects a historic number of Americans to travel during the Independence Day holiday period in 2025, with more than 72.2 million people projected to journey at least 50 miles from home. This marks a 1.7 million increase over last year’s record and a surge of 7 million more than in 2019. This year’s forecast spans from Saturday, June 28 to Sunday, July 6, encompassing two weekends to better reflect shifting travel patterns.

With July 4 falling on a Friday, travelers have more flexibility to extend vacations into a long weekend or even take the entire week off. The uptick in travel demand is evident across all transportation modes—road, air, rail, and cruise—though road trips continue to dominate the landscape.

Road Trips Dominate July 4 Travel

Out of the 72.2 million total travelers, AAA projects that 61.6 million will hit the road, a 2.2% increase from 2024 and the highest Independence Day driving volume on record. That means 1.3 million more drivers are expected on U.S. highways this year compared to last.

AAA advises drivers to perform routine vehicle maintenance and pack an emergency kit. Last year, AAA responded to nearly 700,000 roadside assistance calls during the July 4 travel week—most involving dead batteries, flat tires, lockouts, and fuel shortages.

Despite global concerns, gas prices remain relatively steady. While geopolitical tensions, such as the ongoing Israel-Iran conflict, have nudged oil prices upward, crude costs are still keeping gas prices lower than recent years. However, the Atlantic hurricane season poses a risk, as severe storms can disrupt Gulf Coast refineries and cause temporary spikes at the pump.

Most Popular Car Rental Dates and Vehicles

Hertz, AAA’s official car rental partner, reports that Thursday, July 3 is expected to be the busiest rental pickup day. Top destinations include Orlando, Denver, Boston, Oahu, and Seattle. SUVs and midsize sedans remain the most popular rental choices for families and road trippers alike.

Air Travel Hits a New Record

Airports are bracing for heavy traffic too. AAA forecasts 5.84 million people will fly during the July 4 period, representing about 8% of all holiday travelers. This sets a new air travel record, surpassing the 5.76 million recorded in 2024.

Domestic roundtrip airfare is averaging $810—4% more than last year. For budget-conscious flyers, AAA recommends booking weekday flights on Tuesdays or Wednesdays to secure lower prices, even for last-minute trips.

Top 10 Domestic and International July 4 Destinations

AAA’s booking data reveals the most sought-after destinations for this summer’s holiday period. On the domestic front, beach towns, cruise ports, and cities with major fireworks shows dominate the list. Internationally, Canada and major European cities are high on travelers’ wish lists.

When to Hit the Road: Best and Worst Times

Transportation analytics firm INRIX warns that the busiest days for driving will be Wednesday, July 2 and Sunday, July 6. Afternoon hours are expected to see the heaviest traffic. INRIX recommends departing during the morning to avoid congestion. Weather events, crashes, and construction zones can add delays, so travelers should check local traffic reports before departing.

Popular driving routes such as I-4 between Tampa and Orlando or I-95 along the East Coast are likely to be congested during peak hours. Each metro area has its own traffic hotspots, so reviewing INRIX’s detailed city-by-city projections is a smart way to plan ahead.

Other Modes of Travel Also on the Rise

Train, bus, and cruise travel are also experiencing a bump. AAA projects 4.78 million travelers will use these alternative modes—a 7.4% increase over last year and nearly matching the pre-pandemic high of 4.79 million. The Alaska cruise season is driving much of this growth, with scenic voyages through the state’s waterways reaching peak demand.

Whether by car, plane, or cruise ship, this year’s Independence Day promises to be the busiest yet. With high demand, travelers are encouraged to plan early, travel smart, and prepare for the road—or sky—ahead.
