Italy tops Europe summer travel bookings with 51.2% online rate

Italy is leading Europe’s summer travel market in 2026, with online booking saturation reaching 51.2%, ahead of Spain on 42.8% and France on 32.9%, according to data compiled by the Ministry of Tourism’s statistical office.

The figures suggest the country is the most in-demand destination of the season, helped by its natural and cultural attractions, competitive prices and improved air links. Lake destinations, spa towns and beach resorts are drawing the strongest interest from travellers.

The report also shows national arrivals rose 4.43% in the first half of the year, while June and July bookings are up 13.4% and 10% respectively from 2025.

Italy’s appeal remains strongest in the peak summer months, despite repeated efforts to spread tourism more evenly through the year. The data show travellers continue to favour the country’s best-known destinations, from alpine lakes to southern coastlines.

According to the booking platform analysis, lake areas recorded the highest online occupancy rate at 54%, making them the top choice for summer 2026. The report said these destinations are being chosen for relaxation, nature and outdoor activities.

Thermal spa destinations and beach resorts followed, both at 51%. The figures point to sustained demand for wellness travel as well as traditional seaside holidays.

Among the most booked regions, Veneto led with 57.5%, followed by Emilia-Romagna at 56.7%, the autonomous province of Trento at 55.7% and Bolzano at 54.9%. Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Sicily and Tuscany also ranked highly.

The Interior Ministry data on the Alloggiati Web platform showed stronger growth in some emerging and coastal regions. Calabria posted the biggest rise at 10.54%, followed by Umbria at 9.70%, Piemonte at 9.22% and Sardinia at 8.24%.

The same data also pointed to a growing preference for non-hotel accommodation, with the sector up 7.46%. That suggests more travellers are turning to apartments, guesthouses and other alternative stays during the summer season.

Price also appears to be supporting demand. The average nightly rate in Italy stands at 153 euro, below Spain’s 170 euro and Greece’s 195 euro, giving the country an edge in a competitive Mediterranean market.

Italy’s summer dominance comes as Europe’s tourism industry continues to recover and adapt after years of disruption. But the latest figures show familiar destinations still have strong pull, especially when weather, access and value line up in their favour.

Travel patterns in 2026 also underline the importance of domestic geography. While coastal areas remain popular, the report suggests inland and northern destinations are attracting more attention, broadening Italy’s summer appeal beyond the traditional beach holiday.

Officials and industry operators are likely to watch whether the momentum continues into late summer and autumn. For now, the numbers indicate Italy remains the standout choice for European travellers looking for a mix of heritage, scenery and relative affordability.
