In a mood of mutual understanding and esteem, Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel and the Indonesian President H.E. Dr. Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono opened ITB Berlin 2013 at the event held on the evening preceding the start of the show.

Merkel commended Indonesia, partner country of ITB Berlin 2013, for its dedication to the sustainable development of the natural resources and culture of this multi-ethnic state as a means of overcoming the 2008/2009 financial crisis. “Indonesia has focused attention on the fact that the peaceful co-existence of different cultures and religions is of major strategic importance.” Working together as partners, Germany in Europe and Indonesia in Asia, are fulfilling similar roles, and both attach great importance to their strong alliances, as Merkel pointed out, drawing attention to the Jakarta Declaration.

The doors at the Berlin Exhibition Grounds opened today for the 47th edition of ITB Berlin. A total of 10,086 companies from 188 countries are presenting their products and services on a display area covering 160,000 square metres at 26 halls.

Lufthansa organized a press conference at ITB Berlin 2013 and announced 16 new connections and 5 new destinations for Summer 2013. The new summer timetable includes five new attractive holiday destinations: Mahón, Jerez de la Frontera, Cardiff, Glasgow and Varna. In the long-haul segment, Lufthansa is launching a new service from Munich to Vancouver on the west coast of Canada in addition to the existing connection from Frankfurt. From July, passengers in Europe will also be able to book and experience the new product and fare concept for Germanwings, which will gradually take over Lufthansa's point-to-point routes. In the summer timetable, Lufthansa customers will have a choice of flights to 218 Lufthansa destinations in 82 countries (previous year: 216 destinations in 83 countries). The summer timetable runs from Sunday, 31 March to Saturday, 26 October 2013.

“This summer we are again offering new flights to fantastic holiday destinations around the Mediterranean and expanding our expertise in the holiday travel segment,” says Jens Bischof, Member of the Lufthansa German Airlines Board.

This summer, vacationers will benefit from a further six new connections to holiday regions around the Mediterranean. These, combined with existing summer destinations, will at times bring to 25 the number of seasonal destinations in Lufthansa's route network, most of which will be served from several airports in Germany. In July and August, the number of flights to holiday destinations will be further increased.

minister-itb13This summer, the Lufthansa Group airlines - Austrian, Brussels, Germanwings, Lufthansa and SWISS - will together serve 285 destinations in 102 countries on four continents from their hubs in Brussels, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Munich, Vienna and Zurich. They will also complement each other's services by offering numerous codeshare flights.

105 stand and 122 exhibitors will promote Turkey at 3079 sqm Turkey pavilion. Izmir is making a special presentation about its EXPO candidacy.
