Hilton Expands in Manhattan with The George at Columbia Opening

Hilton has expanded its presence in New York City with the opening of The George at Columbia, Tapestry Collection by Hilton, in Harlem.

Located at 412 West 126th Street near Columbia University, the new hotel marks Hilton’s first property in the neighborhood and aims to reflect Harlem’s deep cultural, artistic, and academic heritage through design and community-focused hospitality.

The 139-room boutique hotel officially joins Hilton’s Tapestry Collection, a portfolio of more than 170 independent hotels worldwide. The George combines locally inspired architecture and décor with Hilton’s modern amenities, offering travelers and residents a new space that celebrates Harlem’s history while fostering local engagement and tourism growth in Upper Manhattan.

Hotel Design and Amenities Reflect Harlem’s Legacy

Designed as a tribute to Harlem’s past and present, The George draws inspiration from local landmarks such as Columbia University, the Apollo Theater, Morningside Park, the Studio Museum in Harlem, and the National Jazz Museum. Its name pays homage to both King George II, who chartered Columbia University in 1754, and George “Shorty George” Snowden, the Harlem dancer credited with creating the Lindy Hop.

“As someone born and raised in Harlem, opening The George is both personal and profound,” said Sam Martinez, general manager, The George at Columbia. “To come back to Harlem for this role and lead a property that brings jobs, cultivates partnerships with local businesses, and welcomes both neighbors and visitors is a true honor.”

The hotel’s design combines rich earth tones, matte blacks, deep greens, and warm neutrals, accented by art deco details, brass finishes, and soft lighting. Public spaces include a lobby bar, terrace lounge, fitness center, and 2,000 square feet of flexible meeting space. Guest rooms feature natural materials, floor-to-ceiling windows, and views of Harlem’s cityscape or the hotel’s pool deck and courtyard.

Additional amenities will roll out over the next year. Two full-service restaurants are planned to open in spring 2026, followed by a heated outdoor pool scheduled for summer 2026. The property also provides complimentary high-speed Wi-Fi and access to Hilton’s digital services, including Digital Key technology for contactless room entry.

Community Partnerships and Local Impact

Hilton describes The George as a hub for both travelers and Harlem residents. Beyond its guest offerings, the property emphasizes local hiring, neighborhood programming, and collaboration with nearby small businesses. The goal is to integrate the hotel into Harlem’s community fabric while attracting visitors seeking an authentic New York experience.

“The George is more than a place to stay: It is a neighborhood hub,” said Andrew Nkunku, regional director of sales and marketing, The George at Columbia. “Through local hiring, community-focused programming, and welcoming public spaces, we’ve built something rooted in Harlem’s history. Our goal is to make the storytelling as dynamic as the guest experience, while immersing ourselves in this community that is so dear to my heart.”

The property’s arrival signals a broader recognition of Harlem’s importance as a destination that extends beyond tourism. Known for its contributions to American art, music, and literature, Harlem is also a center of education and cultural exchange, with Columbia University serving as one of the area’s anchors. The George at Columbia aims to serve as a bridge between visitors and the neighborhood’s creative and academic communities.

“There is always something unique to discover at every Tapestry Collection by Hilton hotel, and The George is no exception,” said Elizabeth Scruggs, brand leader, Tapestry Collection by Hilton. “Its authentic connection to the community, clever namesake and warm, welcoming design make it a gathering spot for guests and locals alike in one of Manhattan’s most vibrant, storied neighborhoods. In short, The George is a stellar addition to our fast-growing Collection of over 170 hotels worldwide.”

Hilton’s Growth and Brand Portfolio

The Tapestry Collection by Hilton was launched to provide travelers with upscale, design-led hotels that maintain an independent character while benefiting from Hilton’s global brand and loyalty infrastructure. Each property is designed to reflect its location’s personality, supported by Hilton’s operational expertise and digital ecosystem.

The opening of The George expands Hilton’s portfolio in New York City, where the company operates multiple properties across Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens. It also reinforces Hilton’s strategic focus on neighborhoods with distinct cultural identities, aligning with trends in urban tourism that prioritize authenticity and local connection.

Guests of The George can earn and redeem points through Hilton Honors, the company’s loyalty program shared across its 22 brands. Hilton Honors members who book directly gain access to exclusive benefits such as flexible point payment, discounted rates, and free standard Wi-Fi. The Hilton Honors mobile app also provides digital check-in and smart room access through Digital Key technology.

The George at Columbia joins a growing list of Tapestry Collection properties across North America, Europe, and Asia. Each hotel features design elements and experiences that capture the essence of its destination, from local art installations to curated dining concepts. For Harlem, The George represents both a new hospitality standard and an acknowledgment of the neighborhood’s enduring influence on global culture.

The hotel’s leadership team emphasizes that its mission goes beyond accommodation. By blending contemporary hospitality with Harlem’s cultural DNA, The George seeks to offer guests and locals a space that is simultaneously rooted in history and oriented toward the future.
