Delta to Begin First JFK–Malta Nonstop Flight in Summer 2026

Delta Air Lines announced it will operate the first nonstop flight between New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and Malta starting in summer 2026. The move marks a milestone for Malta’s tourism development in North America and coincides with the opening of a new Malta Tourism Authority (MTA) office in New York City.

The announcement was made as a Maltese delegation, led by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Ian Borg, arrived in New York on September 17. The delegation will inaugurate the MTA’s new office at Malta’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations on September 19, underscoring the country’s commitment to strengthening its tourism and diplomatic presence in the United States.

Delta’s new transatlantic connection

The nonstop flight will represent the first direct air link between the United States and Malta, opening opportunities for both leisure and business travel. Delta confirmed the route will launch in summer 2026, providing American travelers with easier access to the Mediterranean nation. For Malta, the service is expected to expand the island’s reach in the North American market, where interest in European destinations continues to grow.

Dr. Ian Borg described the development as a turning point for Malta’s international engagement. “This is a landmark development for the Maltese Islands, and for the long-standing ties between Malta and the US,” said Dr. Ian Borg, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs.

“It strengthens our tourism potential in the North American market, to attract discerning tourists who can truly appreciate Malta’s unique and authentic travel experiences. It also empowers more social, cultural and economic collaborations between our nations.”

The launch is supported by Malta’s tourism authority, which has emphasized the potential of the U.S. market to deliver higher-spending visitors. According to officials, the direct link is expected to facilitate growth in both high-end luxury travel and younger independent tourism segments.

Tourism Authority expands presence in New York

The Delta announcement coincides with the Malta Tourism Authority’s decision to expand its representation in North America. On September 19, the MTA will open a new office in New York City at Malta’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations, located at 244 East 48th Street. The new office will serve as a base for tourism promotion, industry engagement, and direct outreach to potential travelers.

Carlo Micallef, CEO of the MTA, said the combination of Delta’s flight and the office opening is pivotal. “Delta’s timely announcement is a gamechanger for Malta Tourism promotion in North America,” said Carlo Micallef, CEO, Malta Tourism Authority.

“When restarting the Malta Tourism Authority presence here 11 years ago, with Michelle Buttigieg as the MTA Representative North America, Malta was known as the ‘Hidden Gem of the Mediterranean’. Now, especially with this first non-stop flight, it is no longer hidden to the American travel market. The interest and demand for Malta, especially from the high end luxury traveler, as well as the young independent traveler, has grown enormously. Now Delta’s direct flight, together with the opening of the MTA office in NYC, will offer Malta new opportunities to expand our promotions in this market.”

The delegation’s activities in New York also include cultural promotion. On September 18, the MTA will host the premiere private screening of “Hidden Malta,” a one-hour PBS special by Peter Greenberg, at the Whitby Hotel in Manhattan. The program is expected to provide further visibility for Malta’s tourism assets in the U.S. market.

Michelle Buttigieg, who has long served as Malta’s representative in North America, highlighted the significance of having a dedicated space in New York. “Now that MTA will have a real ‘VISITMALTA’ space, we will be able to expand our support for our travel industry partners,” said Michelle Buttigieg, Malta Tourism Authority Representative North America. “We will also be able to welcome potential travelers themselves and provide them with specific information tailored to their interests, as well as host Maltese themed events.”

Strategic opportunities for Malta

The new JFK–Malta route is designed to broaden Malta’s accessibility in a highly competitive transatlantic market. U.S. travelers currently reach Malta via European gateways, often requiring multiple connections. The nonstop flight will reduce travel time and simplify itineraries, making Malta a more viable option for American tourists seeking Mediterranean destinations.

The MTA emphasized that direct connectivity is a critical factor in destination growth. With the addition of Delta’s service, Malta expects to enhance its profile among U.S. travelers seeking cultural, historical, and luxury experiences. The announcement also comes as Delta introduces promotional fares for both Sardinia and Malta, available for a limited time, signaling the carrier’s confidence in growing demand for Southern European destinations.

The delegation in New York includes senior Maltese officials and tourism executives. Attendees at the official events this week include Malta’s Ambassador to the United States, H.E. Godfrey Xuereb; Malta’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, H.E. Natasha Meli-Daudey; and members of the MTA head office delegation, Arthur Grima, Director of Marketing, and Yasmine Scorfna, Marketing Manager. They will join representatives of the private sector and U.S. travel industry leaders for the ribbon cutting ceremony and cultural promotion activities.

For Malta, the introduction of a nonstop U.S. flight represents both a symbolic and practical step forward. The announcement highlights the country’s intention to secure a stronger foothold in one of the world’s most lucrative outbound markets while continuing to build on its reputation as a Mediterranean destination that blends history, culture, and leisure. With Delta’s inaugural flight set for summer 2026, Malta’s visibility in North America is expected to rise significantly in the years ahead.
