Etihad Airways has introduced a new chapter in narrowbody travel with the delivery of its first Airbus A321LR. The aircraft, unveiled during a ceremony in Hamburg on July 24, features previously exclusive amenities to long-haul widebody jets—most notably private First Suites and flatbed Business Class—on shorter and medium-haul routes.
The arrival marks the beginning of Etihad’s next phase of fleet expansion, with 30 of these long-range, single-aisle aircraft scheduled for delivery. The A321LR will begin commercial service on August 1, operating routes such as Abu Dhabi to Phuket, and will later expand to a network of 16 destinations including Paris, Bangkok, Milan, and Zurich.
Redefining Luxury on Narrowbody Jets
At the core of the new aircraft’s appeal is its revolutionary cabin design. The A321LR debuts Etihad’s first-ever First-Class product on a single-aisle aircraft: fully enclosed First Suites featuring sliding privacy doors, flat beds, and 20-inch 4K entertainment screens. Bluetooth pairing and wireless charging come standard, along with space for a guest to dine or relax beside the traveler.
Business Class passengers enjoy a similar elevation in experience. Fourteen herringbone-configured seats in a 1-1 layout ensure direct aisle access for every traveler. Each seat includes a 17.3-inch 4K touchscreen, Bluetooth audio pairing, and personalized comfort features, echoing the design sensibility typically found in Etihad’s long-haul fleet.
Cabin Configuration Overview:
- First Class: Private suites with fully-flat beds, sliding doors, 4K displays, companion seating
- Business Class: 14 seats in 1-1 layout, direct aisle access, Bluetooth, wireless charging
- Economy Class: 144 seats with 13.3-inch 4K screens, USB ports, Bluetooth support
In Economy, passengers can expect comfort above the usual single-aisle standard. The 144 seats are outfitted with large 13.3-inch entertainment screens, USB charging, and Bluetooth connectivity. Even luggage storage has been rethought—enlarged overhead bins provide more space for carry-ons, reducing the boarding-time scramble.
Staying Connected at 35,000 Feet
One of the most anticipated features of Etihad’s A321LR is its high-speed Wi-Fi, powered by Viasat’s technology. Offering speeds in the hundreds of Mbps, the onboard connection enables passengers to stream, game, video call, and browse as if they were at home or in the office. Wi-Fi will be progressively rolled out across Asian routes beginning in September 2025.
The aircraft offers gate-to-gate connectivity—where permitted—meaning travelers can stay online from the moment they board to the moment they land. This feature supports both productivity for business travelers and entertainment for leisure flyers, marking a significant upgrade in the narrowbody flying experience.
Fleet Growth Meets Global Ambition
The A321LR supports Etihad’s ambitious “Journey 2030” vision, which aims to increase annual passenger capacity to 38 million by the end of the decade. With 27 new routes announced in a single year and nine additional A321LR aircraft expected in 2025, the airline is using this flexible, fuel-efficient model to extend its reach to both emerging and established markets.
The aircraft’s long-range capability allows it to bridge gaps in Etihad’s network while maintaining premium service standards. Cities such as Algiers, Düsseldorf, Chiang Mai, and Krakow are on the deployment list, positioning Etihad to offer luxury across a more diversified network.
Initial Route Rollout Includes:
- Abu Dhabi – Phuket
- Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Krabi
- Paris, Milan, Zurich
- Phnom Penh, Medan, Kolkata
- Algiers, Tunis, Düsseldorf, Krakow
Industry Partnership and Innovation
“The delivery of Etihad’s first Airbus A321LR is a powerful symbol of innovation and partnership,” said Benoît de Saint-Exupéry, Executive Vice President Sales of Airbus Commercial Aircraft. “It sets a new standard for comfort in the single-aisle category and paves the way for increased connectivity as Etihad expands from its Abu Dhabi hub.”
Airbus’s A321LR platform is considered one of the most efficient in its class, capable of flying up to 4,000 nautical miles. By pairing it with luxury-first cabin features and high-tech connectivity, Etihad is aiming to outpace industry standards and reimagine what travelers expect on a narrowbody aircraft.
Etihad’s move comes amid a growing industry trend to bring premium experiences to short and medium-haul flights. By offering flatbeds, private suites, and Wi-Fi on a single-aisle aircraft, the airline positions itself at the forefront of that evolution.
