Etihad Airways Adds Charlotte to U.S. Routes

Etihad Airways announced that new Charlotte flights will begin on 4 May 2026, marking the airline’s official entry into North Carolina’s largest city.

With this new route, Etihad becomes the first airline from the Gulf region to launch nonstop service to Charlotte, further expanding its growing U.S. network and strengthening links between the UAE and southeastern United States.

Charlotte Becomes Etihad’s Sixth U.S. Destination

Etihad’s new service adds Charlotte to an established lineup of U.S. destinations that already includes New York, Chicago, Washington, Boston, and Atlanta—which itself is set to launch on 2 July. Charlotte is now Etihad’s sixth U.S. gateway and its first in North Carolina, a state known for its booming finance sector, motorsports heritage, and rich southern hospitality.

The route will be operated four times per week using Etihad’s Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft, offering both Business and Economy class cabins with the airline’s award-winning onboard service. The schedule is optimized for seamless onward connections through Etihad’s Abu Dhabi hub, giving U.S. passengers greater access to destinations across the Middle East, South Asia, and Asia-Pacific regions.

Why Charlotte? A Strategic Move for Etihad

Charlotte, one of America’s fastest-growing metropolitan areas, serves as a major financial and cultural center. It’s home to headquarters for major corporations, a thriving tech industry, and one of the most significant motorsport scenes in the U.S., including the iconic NASCAR Hall of Fame.

Charlotte Douglas International Airport is also a critical factor in the airline’s expansion plan. In 2024, the airport ranked sixth globally in aircraft movements, confirming its status as one of the world’s busiest and most efficient aviation hubs.

Etihad’s CEO Antonoaldo Neves emphasized the importance of this move: “Charlotte represents a strategic addition to our U.S. network, unlocking direct access to one of the country’s most dynamic and fast-growing regions. We’re excited to be the first airline from our region to serve this market, and we look forward to connecting more travellers to Abu Dhabi and beyond.”

Flight Schedule and Connectivity

The service schedule is crafted with international travelers in mind. With early morning departures from Abu Dhabi and midday returns from Charlotte, the route enables efficient connections to Etihad’s global destinations. This includes one-stop travel from Charlotte to cities in:

  • The Middle East
  • The Indian Subcontinent
  • East and Southeast Asia
  • Africa and Australia (via Abu Dhabi)

Additionally, travelers flying to the U.S. benefit from U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Preclearance at Zayed International Airport in Abu Dhabi. This allows passengers to complete U.S. immigration and customs checks before departure, arriving in Charlotte as domestic travelers for a faster and smoother arrival process.

Etihad’s Growing North American Presence

This latest announcement follows Etihad’s broader strategy of increasing its footprint in North America. By launching new services to major regional hubs, the airline aims to provide more options for both business and leisure travelers looking for efficient, high-quality, and culturally connected journeys.
