Frankfurt Airport has issued a warning to travelers about ongoing disruptions to S-Bahn train services caused by construction work in the Offenbach City Tunnel.
The closure, which began earlier this month, will continue until October 20 at 4:20 a.m., affecting several key S-Bahn lines serving the Frankfurt Rhine-Main region and airport connections.
The suspension impacts lines S1, S2, S8, and S9, with altered routes and shortened services in place. The S8 is rerouted via Frankfurt Süd and Offenbach-Zentrum, while the S9 currently operates only between Wiesbaden and Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof, skipping its usual stop at Frankfurt Airport. Service interruptions also affect the S1 and S2 lines, disrupting direct travel for passengers connecting to Offenbach and surrounding areas.
Bus Replacements and Alternative Travel Options
To compensate for the closures, Deutsche Bahn (DB) and Rhein-Main-Verkehrsverbund (RMV) have introduced replacement bus services between Frankfurt Ostendstraße and Offenbach Ost. The buses stop at affected stations, including Kaiserlei, Ledermuseum, and Marktplatz, which cannot be reached by train during the tunnel works. Passengers are advised to allow extra travel time and expect longer connections and transfers throughout the affected corridor.
In addition to the main tunnel construction, DB and RMV are conducting nightly maintenance on overhead power lines west of the airport. The work runs daily from 8 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. and causes further restrictions on S8 and S9 operations to Frankfurt Airport. On specific nights, including October 16–17 and October 19–20, sections of the network will be completely closed, with no S-Bahn service running between Wiesbaden and Kelsterbach on one night, and the S9 suspended on another. During these periods, the S8 will bypass Mainz-Kastel without stopping.
Airport Travelers Advised to Check Schedules
Frankfurt Airport officials and RMV are urging passengers to plan ahead and monitor real-time updates before traveling. The RMV recommends that travelers allow additional time to reach the airport and consider alternative transport where possible. Regional train services RE2 and RE3 remain available between Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof and the airport’s regional station and can be used as substitutes for disrupted S-Bahn connections.
“We advise passengers to plan for longer travel times and to check the current timetable before departure,” said an RMV spokesperson. The operator emphasized that simultaneous construction projects across the Frankfurt metropolitan area may cause further short-notice disruptions during the same period.
For passengers traveling from Offenbach and nearby cities, delays, additional transfers, and reliance on substitute buses will remain unavoidable until work concludes on October 20. Updated travel information and revised timetables are available through RMV’s official website at www.rmv.de.
The Offenbach City Tunnel closure forms part of a broader infrastructure improvement effort across the Rhine-Main region aimed at enhancing reliability and capacity on one of Germany’s busiest commuter rail networks. Once completed, the upgrades are expected to improve long-term efficiency on routes connecting Frankfurt, Offenbach, and the airport.
