Valencia Airport reached an unprecedented milestone in August, surpassing 1.18 million passengers in a single month for the first time in its history.
The figure represents a 5.5% increase over the same month in 2024 and reflects the airport’s continued growth driven primarily by international traffic.
The results, published by airport operator Aena, confirm that August 2025 was the best month ever recorded at the Manises facility. While domestic traffic contracted, the surge in international travelers more than compensated, reinforcing Valencia’s role as a growing hub for overseas tourism and connectivity.
Record Passenger Traffic
According to Aena, the airport handled 1,180,047 passengers during August. This included nearly 900,000 international travelers, an increase of 9% compared with August 2024. In contrast, domestic traffic fell 4.6% year on year, totaling 282,245 passengers. The figures underline a shift toward outbound and inbound international travel, even during Spain’s traditional peak holiday month.
Italy remained Valencia’s leading international market, accounting for more than 181,000 passengers. Germany followed with 100,433 travelers, while France and the United Kingdom recorded 94,980 and 93,730 passengers respectively. The data highlights the strength of European demand and the city’s expanding air connectivity with major markets across the continent.
More Flights, More Growth
The increase in passenger volume was supported by a higher number of flight operations. In August, Valencia Airport managed 8,630 flights, up 3.9% from the same month last year. The additional movements contributed to the rise in international seat capacity and frequency, particularly on popular leisure routes.
Cumulatively, the airport welcomed more than 7.9 million travelers between January and August, a 9.2% rise compared with 7.25 million during the same period in 2024. This growth follows a record-setting 2024, when the airport exceeded its official capacity of 10.5 million passengers by more than 300,000.
Capacity Challenges Ahead
The sustained growth places further pressure on the infrastructure at Manises. According to reports such as one from Cámara Valencia, the airport is already operating nearly 20% above the levels set by the national airport regulation framework (DORA II). If current trends continue, annual passenger volumes could surpass 11.5 million or even approach 12 million by the end of 2025.
To address capacity constraints, Aena has announced plans to expand the passenger terminal. The project, however, is not expected to be completed before 2027, leaving the airport facing several years of strong growth without significant additional capacity. Details of the expansion have yet to be disclosed despite the project being confirmed more than 18 months ago.
The record-breaking August underscores the strength of Valencia’s international appeal and its recovery trajectory since the pandemic. The increase in foreign travelers reflects both rising demand for Spanish destinations and the city’s growing role as a Mediterranean gateway.
While domestic travel showed signs of contraction, international tourism continues to fuel the airport’s expansion, ensuring that Valencia Airport remains on track for another record-breaking year. With passenger volumes climbing and capacity challenges mounting, the airport’s growth illustrates both the opportunities and pressures facing Spain’s regional hubs.
