Southwest Airlines will add Anchorage, Alaska, to its route network in the first half of 2026, marking the carrier’s entry into its 43rd U.S. state.
The new service will operate from Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport, with flights expected to go on sale later this month as part of the airline’s upcoming schedule extension.
Anchorage becomes the fifth new destination announced by Southwest in 2025 and will expand the carrier’s reach to 122 airports when operations begin. The move strengthens the airline’s domestic footprint and introduces new connections for both Alaskan residents and visitors traveling across the United States.
Anchorage Service and Economic Impact
Southwest Chief Operating Officer Andrew Watterson said the addition of Anchorage underscores the airline’s strategy of network growth into markets that previously seemed out of reach. “We’re adding destinations that once seemed inconceivable for Southwest in order to build a route network that creates new experiences and more possibilities than ever before,” said Watterson. “We look forward to connecting our Customers to the rich history and culture of Anchorage and connecting the 49th state to our vast domestic network.”
Alaska state and city leaders welcomed the announcement, noting the potential benefits for both residents and the local economy. Ryan Anderson, Commissioner of the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities, said, “Air travel is a lifeline in Alaska, and Southwest’s arrival in Anchorage is a major win for our communities. This service will provide more affordable, reliable connections for Alaskans and help share our great state with more visitors than ever before.”
Anchorage Mayor Suzanne LaFrance added that the expansion will boost tourism and local businesses. “This will be a big economic boost for Anchorage and all of southcentral Alaska,” said LaFrance. “We are excited to share our rich cultural heritage, magnificent landscapes, and diverse community with a larger group of travelers.”
Southwest Enhancements for Travelers
The expansion to Anchorage follows a series of updates to Southwest’s onboard experience as the airline adapts to changing customer needs. The carrier has confirmed the rollout of assigned and premium seating, an update from its long-standing open-seating model. It is also introducing free Wi-Fi for Rapid Rewards members, enabled through a partnership with T-Mobile, and expanding access to in-seat power across its Boeing 737-8 fleet, with plans for full fleet coverage in the future.
Southwest has positioned its loyalty program, Rapid Rewards, at the center of these changes. Members can continue to earn points through flights and partner spending, purchase points to unlock rewards, and enjoy exclusive benefits such as complimentary Wi-Fi and enhanced tier perks. The airline has also relaunched its Rapid Rewards Credit Cards through Chase, offering additional incentives to frequent flyers and everyday cardholders.
The announcement of Anchorage service reflects Southwest’s broader expansion strategy. Earlier in 2025, the airline unveiled plans for four other new destinations, aiming to strengthen its competitive edge in U.S. domestic travel. Alaska, however, represents a milestone, linking the mainland network to the 49th state for the first time in the company’s history.
