Turkish Airlines cancels flights to Sharm el-Sheikh

Following Saturday’s Russian jet crash in the Sinai peninsula, Turkish Airlines canceled its Thursday’s flights to and from Egypt’s Sharm el-Sheikh due to security concerns.British carriers also struggle to evacuate thousands of British tourists from Sharm el-Sheikh, but Egyptian authorities block flights to take off.

On Wednesday, the U.K. and Ireland also directed airlines under their jurisdiction to avoid the Sharm el-Sheikh area over fears that Saturday’s crash may have been caused by a bomb, authorities from both countries announced.

However, British media reported late on Thursday that U.K.-operated flights to Sharm el-Sheikh would restart on Friday.

And today, a massive operation to evacuate thousands of British tourists from Sharm el-Sheikh was thrown into chaos after the Egyptian authorities blocked flights from taking off at the last minute. More than 20 ‘rescue flights’ were set to leave the Red Sea resort throughout today.

In a statement, Easyjet said: ‘The Egyptian authorities have currently suspended UK airlines from flying into Sharm el Sheikh. This means that eight of easyJet’s 10 planned flights today will no longer be able to operate.
