US airports warn of delays as TSA pay halted amid funding uncertainty

US airports are warning of potential delays as Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officers face the prospect of unpaid wages if Congress fails to pass a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) funding bill. The situation emerges ahead of a busy travel period, with millions of Americans expected to pass through airports in the coming weeks.

The funding uncertainty means TSA officers could receive $0 paychecks while continuing to staff airport security checkpoints nationwide. At the same time, Congress is preparing to leave Washington for a two-week recess, raising concerns about disruption to airport operations and longer wait times for travellers.

Industry voices warn that the impact on passengers could be immediate if the funding lapse is not resolved. Over the next three weeks, airports across the US are expected to see increased passenger volumes, heightening pressure on already stretched security operations.

Key concerns highlighted include:

  • Longer security wait times at major US airports
  • Reduced staffing availability due to unpaid TSA officers
  • Increased passenger frustration during peak travel periods

The warning comes as lawmakers are expected to travel during the recess period, passing through the same airport security systems staffed by TSA officers affected by the funding gap.

“Come Friday, if Congress fails to do its job and pass a DHS funding bill, they’ll head to the airports, get escorted to the front of the security line and be screened by the very TSA officers they failed to pay,” the statement said.

The statement also urges lawmakers to resolve the issue before leaving Washington. “Do not board that flight, pack that bag, or clear that schedule until TSA officers have been paid,” it said.

Security officers are described as continuing to report to work despite the uncertainty, maintaining airport operations and ensuring passenger safety. The situation has drawn attention to the critical role TSA staff play in keeping the US travel system functioning.

“These are the men and women showing up every single day to keep travelers safe and the system moving,” the statement added.

Officials warn that failure to pass funding could have broader consequences for the travel experience. Without a resolution, airports may face operational strain just as passenger numbers rise, potentially affecting both domestic and international travel.

The statement concludes with a call for immediate action from lawmakers. “Fix this before you leave Washington. Pass the funding. Pay our TSA officers. The American people are watching, and they will remember who stayed to get it done and who didn’t.”
