Avani Chooses Kyoto for Its First Hotel in Japan

Minor Hotels has announced the development of Avani Kyoto, marking the Avani brand’s first hotel in Japan. Scheduled to open in 2030, the approximately 240-room property will be developed in partnership with Taisei Corporation and Heiwa Real Estate Co., Ltd., with Minor Hotels participating as both investor and operator.

The hotel will be located on Karasuma Street in central Kyoto, occupying the former headquarters site of the Kyoto Shimbun newspaper. The property will have direct access to Marutamachi Station on the Karasuma Subway Line and will be within walking distance of major attractions including the Kyoto Imperial Palace and Nijo Castle.

The project includes the renovation of the site’s existing North Building and the construction of a new South Building. Together, the buildings will create a hotel designed to blend Kyoto’s architectural heritage with the expectations of modern travellers.

Avani Kyoto will offer approximately 240 guest rooms and feature dining venues and shared social spaces. The hotel is being planned to accommodate both short-term visitors and longer stays, reflecting the brand’s focus on flexible and contemporary urban hospitality.

William E. Heinecke, Founder & Chairman of Minor International, said: “Avani Kyoto represents an important step in Minor Hotels’ long term expansion strategy, bringing the brand into one of Asia’s most culturally significant destinations. Through our local partners, we are creating a hotel that is aligned with the character of Kyoto while delivering a contemporary experience for guests.”

Part of a broader Japan expansion

The Kyoto development forms part of Minor Hotels’ wider strategy to expand in Japan through its joint venture with Royal Holdings Co., Ltd.. The partnership is expected to support the growth of the group’s Anantara, Avani and Tivoli brands in key gateway cities and leisure destinations across the country.

Avani Hotels & Resorts currently operates more than 40 properties across five continents. The brand’s portfolio includes city hotels, beach resorts and nature retreats, with a focus on smart design, upbeat service and value-driven experiences.

The opening of Avani Kyoto will strengthen Minor Hotels’ presence in Asia while giving the Avani brand a foothold in one of the region’s most visited cultural destinations. The project also reflects growing international hotel investment in Kyoto, where demand from both domestic and overseas travellers continues to support new hospitality developments.
