Thailand Becomes Top Convention Destination in ASEAN

Thailand becomes the top convention destination of the ASEAN region, according to the ICCA Country & City Rankings for 2024 Report.

The report shows that Thailand hosted 124 ICCA-recognized conventions in 2023, ranking 26th globally and 5th in the Asia-Pacific region. Bangkok and Pattaya, two major Thai cities, have also climbed in the rankings, with Bangkok securing the 2nd spot in ASEAN and 9th in Asia-Pacific, while Pattaya emerged as the top second-tier city in ASEAN and 21st in the Asia-Pacific. These results mark a new era for Thailand as it redefines its international appeal beyond tourism and hospitality.

Strategic Growth in Thailand’s MICE Industry

The Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (TCEB) played a pivotal role in this advancement. Their “One Ministry, One Convention” policy, integrated with the national soft power strategy, was designed to foster collaboration across government agencies to attract high-profile international conventions. By aligning events with the strengths of local ministries, Thailand successfully increased its convention wins and diversified its event portfolio.

This strategy also supports long-term development. TCEB’s efforts to build event intelligence, upgrade domestic capabilities, and strengthen international collaborations have created a robust ecosystem for hosting international events. Additionally, its co-hosting of the 62nd ICCA Congress in 2023 highlighted Thailand’s ability to engage with global stakeholders and influence the future of the MICE sector.

Thailand’s Competitive Advantages

Thailand’s rise as a convention destination isn’t just about numbers. The country offers a combination of factors that make it attractive for global event organizers. These include:

  • State-of-the-art convention centers and hospitality infrastructure
  • Strategic location in Southeast Asia with excellent flight connectivity
  • Diverse tourism offerings—culture, beaches, cuisine, and nature
  • Strong government support through national policies and funding
  • Experienced local partners and skilled professionals in the event industry

Bangkok remains a major draw for large-scale international conferences thanks to its infrastructure and access, while Pattaya continues to gain traction for medium-sized meetings and incentive groups due to its relaxed environment and growing facilities. Other rising cities such as Chiang Mai and Khon Kaen are also being groomed as future convention hubs.

Key Sectors Driving Convention Growth

TCEB’s approach to matching conventions with national strengths has created opportunities for cross-sectoral growth. Major focus areas include:

  • Health and medical sciences
  • Technology and innovation
  • Sustainable development and climate solutions
  • Cultural and creative industries
  • Education and research collaboration

These focus areas allow Thailand to host impactful, future-forward events that not only bring delegates to its shores but also help shape global discussions on pressing issues.

What’s Thailand’s MICE Strategy?

Building on this momentum, TCEB plans to scale up its regional leadership. The agency is currently rolling out initiatives aimed at nurturing second-tier cities and broadening accessibility to event venues across the country. It is also investing in digitalization, sustainability certification, and green event standards to meet the rising expectations of international planners.

Looking ahead, Thailand aims to secure a top 20 spot globally and move higher within the Asia-Pacific region. The groundwork laid through government-private partnerships, infrastructure development, and strategic planning sets the stage for continued success in attracting world-class conventions.

With this milestone, Thailand is not just inviting the world to visit—but encouraging it to convene, collaborate, and create lasting impact on its soil.
