For the first time, ObservaTUR has broken down travel behavior by region, offering a territory-focused analysis just in time for the summer season. While Madrid leads in international travel, Catalonia tops the spending chart, and Andalusians show the highest willingness to finance their vacations through credit. Together, these regions form a microcosm of Spain’s evolving tourism outlook.

Madrid: More Travelers, Longer Trips, Broader Horizons

Travelers from the Madrid region are the most active in the country, exceeding the national average for travel frequency by three percentage points. They are also the most likely to vacation abroad, with nearly 47.5% planning to travel internationally in summer 2025. Their interest aligns with this global perspective on far-flung destinations—particularly Asia, which stands out as a key target for Madrid-based tourists.

Spending by Madrid residents is high, averaging €1,958 per person, making them second only to Catalans. Their preferred domestic destination remains the Mediterranean coast, aligning with the national trend toward sun-and-beach escapes. However, unlike their counterparts in other regions, travelers from Madrid are expected to organize more trips independently and book fewer scheduled activities, emphasizing flexibility over pre-packaged experiences.

Catalonia leads the national ranking in average summer vacation spending, with travelers expected to invest around €2,064 per person. This figure places them well above the national average of €739 per individual. The data suggests Catalan tourists are planning longer trips—many over 15 days—and are more inclined to cross international borders, second only to those from Madrid.

A significant portion of Catalans favor all-inclusive packages and show a strong appetite for activities, especially cultural ones. While the Mediterranean coast remains the preferred domestic option, Catalan tourists are eager to complement relaxation with meaningful experiences, underscoring their interest in destinations that offer both leisure and enrichment.

Andalusia: Vacation Financing and Domestic Loyalty

Andalusia ranks third in spending, with residents allocating an average of €1,702 per person for summer 2025 holidays. While slightly below the national total average, Andalusians stand out as the group most willing to finance their trips, coming in four points above the rest of the population in terms of debt acceptance for travel purposes.

They are also among the most likely to choose all-inclusive packages, with 54.2% favoring that option, and they lead in purchasing travel insurance. Although fewer Andalusians opt for international trips compared to Catalans and madrileños, they demonstrate strong commitment to domestic travel, primarily within Spain’s sun-rich coastal zones. Their interest in bundled travel reflects a practical approach to balancing budget with comfort.
